It is a sad day indeed as popular actor Dennis Waterman has passed away. He was 74 years old. The actor gained fame after starring in television shows like Minder, The Sweeney, and New Tricks. His family has further issued an official statement confirming the devastating news.
The actor had a successful run in the Showbiz industry that spanned as many as six decades. Waterman portrayed the role of a tough cop named George Carter in The Sweeney and went on to star as retired police officer Gerry Standing, who is brought back as part of a cold case unit, in the BBC’s New Tricks.
Several Celebs Have Paid Their Heartfelt Tribute
Waterman’s co-star Matt Lucas paid his tribute to the late actor as he recalled how he grew up watching Dennis Waterman’s performances in The Sweeney and Minder. He further mentioned Waterman’s guest appearance in their Little Britain Live show at Hammersmith Apollo and how he hilariously duetted with David’s absurd impersonation of him. Lucas admitted that it remains the absolute highlight of his career. Here’s what Matt Lucas wrote on his Twitter account.

Paddy McGuinness also paid his tribute. He stated that he is absolutely gutted as he never got to meet him and how he always wanted to be Terry McCann. Paddy mourned as another icon from his childhood was gone. Dennis Waterman’s other television roles include ITV’s Where The Heart Is and the BBC’s The Canterbury Tales and Moses Jones.
The actor used to sing the theme songs to many of his shows and was even caricatured by David Walliams in Little Britain. Waterman also had his fair share of experience in the theatre world as he starred in productions of Serjeant Musgrave’s Dance, Twelfth Night, and Edward Bond’s Saved at the Royal Court Theatre. He was also known to have a keen interest in music which gained chart success in Australia, New Zealand, and Britain.
