Korean cinema continues to shine in 2025 with “The Match” officially surpassing 2 million moviegoers at the domestic box office!
As confirmed by the Korean Film Council on April 21, the sports drama achieved this milestone in less than 27 days since its premiere on March 26 — making it the second Korean film of the year to reach this achievement, after “Hitman 2.”
Starring veteran actor Lee Byung Hun alongside Go Chang Suk, Hyun Bong Sik, and Moon Jung Hee, the film tells an intense and emotional story centered on mentorship, rivalry, and the high-stakes world of Go (baduk).
Directed by Kim Hyung Joo, The Match blends character-driven drama with thrilling sports tension, earning praise from both critics and moviegoers.
Its success places it in elite company, joining just two other films in 2025 to cross the 2 million mark so far — including the Korean action sequel Hitman 2 and the international sci-fi blockbuster Mickey 17.
In celebration of the milestone, the film’s cast and director posed for a commemorative photo, radiating gratitude to fans and film lovers across the country.
This box office achievement highlights the power of strong performances and emotionally charged storytelling, as The Match continues to draw audiences with its layered narrative and gripping cinematic execution.
