Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki’s relationship once seemed like the perfect match, both athletes at the top of their respective sports, but their engagement in 2014 was followed by a dramatic and sudden breakup that left fans and the media buzzing.
The couple had been together for three years before Rory proposed on New Year’s Eve in 2013, and wedding plans were already underway.
However, just six months after the proposal, the couple called off the engagement in what was later described as a “three-minute phone call.”
The breakup was a shock to many, with Wozniacki admitting she was caught off guard by the sudden end. Rory later suggested the split was mutual, but reports indicated that the breakup had been one-sided.

At the time, Caroline described it as “a bit of a shock,” and while Rory later married Erica Stoll and started a family, the history with Wozniacki seemed to linger in his mind.
In the years following the split, Rory McIlroy alluded to his past relationship with Caroline, particularly when reflecting on his engagement to Stoll.
He revealed that he had believed being with someone in a similar situation to himself (a fellow athlete) was the key to happiness, but he later realized that this wasn’t the answer.
According to Rory, his current relationship with Erica Stoll feels more authentic because “there’s no acting” and “no bulls***,” allowing him to truly be himself.
His comments about his relationship with Caroline didn’t sit well with the tennis star, who responded by expressing surprise at his repeated references to their past.
She stated that it had been three years since the breakup and suggested Rory should move on from bringing up their past relationship.
As for Caroline Wozniacki, she moved on with her life after the split. In 2019, she married former NBA champion David Lee, and the couple now has two children together. Just recently, they announced that they are expecting their third child later this year.
After retiring from tennis in 2020 following the Australian Open, Wozniacki has focused on her family life, with her priorities shifting toward raising her children.
While the relationship between McIlroy and Wozniacki has long been over, it remains a chapter in both of their lives that has garnered media attention over the years.

As both have moved on and found happiness in new relationships, it’s clear that they have both grown beyond their past, even if some echoes of their history remain in the public eye.
While Wozniacki continues to focus on her family and McIlroy continues to make headlines in golf, it seems that the former couple is firmly in the past — though their shared history will likely always be a part of their public personas.
