The final episode of The Couple Next Door brings all the tension, deception, and passion to a dramatic end. Throughout the six-episode season, the show has built up secrets, betrayals, and unexpected desires, and everything comes to a head in the last episode.
The season began with a mysterious scene—four characters running from a cottage into the woods while a gunshot echoed in the background. That scene becomes clear in the finale as all the characters finally meet at the cottage, where emotions spiral out of control.

Evie’s Deepening Obsession Leads to Chaos
Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) has been drawn to Danny (Sam Heughan) since the beginning. What started as an attraction during the couple swap grows into something more intense.
In the finale, she learns she is pregnant with Danny’s child, and this fuels her obsession. She had lied about being on birth control during their intimate encounter, and now, she is determined to keep him in her life.
When Pete (Alfred Enoch) finds out the truth, he is devastated. Hurt and betrayed, he pulls away from Evie, and she decides to stay at her parents’ house. She asks to stay in the cottage on their property, hoping to figure out her next move. While there, she confesses to her father that Pete is not the baby’s father.
Her father is horrified and walks away, disgusted by what she has done. Feeling abandoned, Evie decides to make Danny come to her by tricking him. She sends him a message, saying she is in danger and needs him to save her from her father.
Danny receives the message and rushes to the cottage, but he is not alone. His wife, Becka (Jessica De Gouw), comes with him. She is already frustrated with Danny for hiding things from her. She recently discovered that he has a son from a previous relationship and that he had slept with Evie again without including their partners.
Despite this, Danny and Becka have built a strong relationship based on communication. They talk openly about their issues and try to move forward.
When they arrive at the cottage, they find Evie waiting for Danny. She is desperate for him to choose her, but Becka and Danny stand united. This moment shows the difference between the two couples—while Danny and Becka work through their problems, Pete and Evie let their issues destroy them.
Pete’s Jealousy and Rage Reach a Breaking Point
Pete, meanwhile, struggles to control his emotions. After publishing an exposé on a powerful businessman, Robbie Spencer (Mark Frost), he no longer has work to distract him. His anger, jealousy, and alcohol consumption take over. He also faces danger when one of Robbie’s men comes to threaten him.
Danny happens to be nearby and steps in to help, but Pete is too consumed by his emotions to be grateful. Instead, he secretly takes the gun that the attacker drops.
Determined to find Evie, Pete heads to her parents’ house. He is convinced she has run away with Danny. On his way, he crosses paths with Jean (Kate Robbins), who has finally decided to leave her husband, Alan (Hugh Dennis). Alan had been stalking Becka and posting her private photos online, trying to ruin her reputation.
Jean realizes she deserves better and walks away from her marriage. She also wants Pete to avoid making a mistake, so she subtly suggests that Danny and Evie are together, which fuels Pete’s growing rage.
A Violent Showdown at the Cottage
Inside the cottage, emotions are already at a breaking point. Evie is trying to win Danny over, while Becka stands by her husband. Then Pete arrives, furious and carrying the gun. His anger is uncontrollable as he shifts between blaming Danny for seducing Evie and blaming Evie for not getting an abortion.
Outside the cottage, Robbie’s hired man is waiting with a sniper rifle aimed at Danny. He plans to kill him as revenge for Pete’s article. However, before he can take the shot, a gunshot from inside the house interrupts him.
Evie’s father, despite being disgusted by her actions, decides to protect his daughter from Pete’s anger. He fires a warning shot, causing panic inside the cottage.
As the chaos unfolds, another gunshot goes off when Pete and Danny fight for control of the gun. Fear spreads as one by one, the characters run out of the cottage into the woods—first Evie, then Pete chasing after her, followed by Danny and Becka.
The tension continues in the forest, where another confrontation leads to Pete shooting Danny in the shoulder. The situation becomes even more intense when Evie, in a moment of desperation, shoots Pete in the stomach.
The Meaning Behind Evie’s Final Smile
As the season ends, Pete survives his injury and is taken to the hospital in an ambulance. Meanwhile, Evie and her father are arrested. As she is being taken away, she looks at Danny and smiles. Her smile is unsettling and leaves many questions. Does she still believe she has a connection with Danny? Is she satisfied that Pete is finally out of her way?
Evie’s behavior throughout the series suggests that her obsession with Danny runs deep. She has always struggled with her emotions, especially due to her strict upbringing and religious trauma.
When she first discovered she was pregnant, she saw it as a sign from God, believing she was being given a second chance after a miscarriage. This belief made her view Danny as someone special in her life. Even after the violent events, she cannot stop looking at him as if he is still part of her future.
Different Relationships, Different Endings
Throughout the show, relationships are tested in different ways. Pete’s jealousy and rigid view of love make him unable to handle Evie’s betrayal. He lets his emotions take over, leading to the violent ending.
On the other hand, Danny and Becka face their challenges with communication and honesty, allowing them to stay together despite Danny’s mistakes.
Jean and Alan’s relationship also adds another layer to the story. Jean endures years of mistreatment and finally finds the strength to walk away, proving that some relationships can end without violence but still leave deep scars.
With the second season confirmed to have a new cast, the stories of these characters have reached their final chapter. Each of them has faced betrayal, secrecy, and heartbreak in different ways, leading to an unforgettable ending. The Couple Next Door is available to stream on Starz in the U.S.
