Now that Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western drama Yellowstone has finished its main storyline, fans are eagerly waiting for the return of the prequel series 1923. With the second season coming to Paramount+ this month, the story of the Dutton family in the early 20th century is heading toward an intense and emotional conclusion.
The show stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton, two strong figures who manage their family’s ranch in Montana.
1923 gives a historical view of Montana during a difficult period, as the Great Depression had already begun affecting the region even before the famous stock market crash. Before the new season arrives, it is a great time to look back at everything that happened in Season 1.

A Violent Range War Begins in Paradise Valley
1923 picks up several decades after the events of 1883. It also connects to flashbacks from Yellowstone’s fourth season, where James Dutton (Tim McGraw) was last seen in 1893. By the 1920s, the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch has grown into a well-known and powerful cattle business. However, that does not mean the Dutton family is safe.
After James Dutton passed away, Jacob and Cara took over the ranch and raised their nephews, John Sr. (James Badge Dale) and Spencer (Brandon Sklenar), to continue the family legacy. Years later, only Jacob, Cara, John, and John’s son, Jack (Darren Mann), remain to protect the land. Spencer, who fought in World War I, has been away for a long time, and his absence leaves the family vulnerable.
The ranch faces a major threat from Scottish shepherds, led by Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn). After the war, many Scottish immigrants arrived in Montana and began raising sheep. Jacob, who is the commissioner of the Livestock Association, strictly enforces laws to prevent them from grazing on Dutton land.
When Banner refuses to listen, Jacob and his men take action, killing some of Banner’s men and nearly executing him as well. Banner manages to survive and takes revenge by attacking the Duttons directly.
This brutal fight ends with John Sr. murdered and Jacob badly wounded. Banner believes Jacob has died, so Cara steps in to take charge. She also writes to Spencer, begging him to return home. Overcome with grief, John Sr.’s widow, Emma (Marley Shelton), takes her own life, leaving Jack without parents.
The conflict grows even more dangerous when a powerful businessman, Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton), arrives. He sees the land’s value and wants to take control of it for mineral mining. He joins forces with Banner and uses his influence to turn more people against the Duttons.
As the cattle business struggles, Jacob slowly recovers from his injuries. With the support of Sheriff William McDowell (Robert Patrick), Jacob charges Banner for John Sr.’s murder. However, Banner is released without bail, and he and Jacob continue to threaten each other.
Spencer Dutton’s Journey of Love and Survival
While the Duttons struggle in Montana, Spencer Dutton is on the other side of the world, hunting dangerous animals in Africa. Since leaving home, he has become a skilled hunter, killing man-eating lions and leopards. However, the horrors of World War I still haunt him, and he avoids returning to Montana.
During his time in Africa, Spencer meets Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer), a British woman who falls in love with him instantly. Many fans consider their romance one of the greatest love stories in the Yellowstone universe. They become engaged quickly, but things change when Spencer finally receives Cara’s letter about John Sr.’s death—three months after it was written.
Determined to help his family, Spencer decides to return home, and Alexandra joins him. They leave Africa and board a ship bound for Europe. While traveling on the S.S. Lambridge, they marry on the open sea. Their happiness is short-lived when they switch ships and encounter Alex’s former fiancé, Arthur (Rafe Soule).
Arthur challenges Spencer to a duel, and Spencer wins. The fight ends with Arthur being thrown overboard. Although Spencer is not arrested, Arthur’s father, Prince Arthur, Earl of Sussex (Bruce Davison), uses his influence to separate them. Spencer is removed from the ship and sent to the nearest port, while Alexandra is taken back to London by her family.
Before parting, Alex reads the address on one of Cara’s letters and promises Spencer that she will meet him in Bozeman. They declare their love from a distance, hoping to reunite despite the obstacles ahead.
Teonna Rainwater’s Fight for Freedom
Like Yellowstone, 1923 also tells the story of Indigenous characters connected to the land. The series follows Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves), a young Crow woman who is likely an ancestor of Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham).
Teonna is forced to live at an Indian boarding school in North Dakota, where she suffers terrible abuse from Sister Mary (Jennifer Ehle). She reaches a breaking point when Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché) punishes her for defending herself. In an act of revenge, Teonna kills Sister Mary and escapes the school, fleeing toward the Badlands.
Father Renaud sends U.S. Marshals to find Teonna, starting with her grandmother, Issaxche (Amelia Rico). When they arrive at her home, they kill the elderly woman, leaving Teonna with nowhere to turn.
While escaping, Teonna is rescued by Hank Plenty Clouds (Michael Greyeyes), who helps her stay hidden. With his son Pete (Cole Brings Plenty), Hank protects her for a time. However, trouble soon follows, leading to Hank’s death.
Pete manages to find Teonna’s father, Runs His Horse (Michael Spears), who arrives to take his daughter home. Since they are still in danger, they decide to travel even farther south to avoid capture. Meanwhile, Father Renaud and Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane) continue expanding their search.
A Tragic Ending Sets Up More Drama in Season 2
The final episode of 1923 Season 1, “Nothing Left to Lose,” brings more heartbreak and intense moments. Spencer and Alexandra remain separated, Teonna is on the run again, and Banner is free to continue his plans.
Jack and his fiancé, Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph), had postponed their wedding due to the ranch’s troubles. After Jack’s parents died, they privately exchanged vows and considered themselves married. However, tragedy strikes again when Elizabeth suffers a miscarriage, adding more pain to the Dutton family.
The conflict affects others on the ranch as well. The loyal ranch foreman, Zane (Brian Geraghty), and his wife, Alice (Joy Osmanski), are attacked. Zane is arrested for miscegenation, a law that made interracial marriage illegal in Montana at the time.
Donald Whitfield takes advantage of the Duttons’ misfortunes. He pays off their unpaid property taxes and warns them that if they do not repay him by the end of the year, he will take their land.
With so many unresolved conflicts, 1923 Season 2 promises more drama, action, and heartbreak as the Duttons fight for their survival. The new season premieres on February 23 on Paramount+.
