Sophie Fights to Remember Her Past in Surface Season 1
Sophie’s life takes a dramatic turn after she falls from a San Francisco ferry and loses her memory. As she tries to understand what happened, she gets conflicting stories from her husband, James (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), and her best friend, Caroline (Ari Graynor). Her therapist, Hannah (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), tells her that she attempted suicide. This raises an important question—if her life was perfect, why would she want to end it?
Sophie becomes even more confused when she meets Thomas Baden (Stephan James), an undercover detective. She learns that she had an affair with him and was planning to leave her husband.
As she spends more time with Baden, he makes her question her marriage. He suggests that James might not be as loving and supportive as he appears. This makes Sophie suspicious, and she begins to investigate her own past.
While searching for the truth, she starts to remember bits and pieces of her past. A mysterious memory of a woman calling her “Tess” makes her question whether Sophie is even her real name. The deeper she looks, the more she realizes that the people in her life are hiding secrets from her.
Sophie’s Relationships Are Full of Secrets
James tries to act as though they can start fresh, believing that Sophie losing her memory is a chance for a new beginning. However, he is hiding a lot from her. At first, Sophie believes that James and Caroline are working against her. Later, she finds out that they slept together not because they were plotting but because they were angry after learning about her affair.
Sophie also learns that she played a major role in James’s business success. She encouraged him to take risky and dishonest actions to get ahead. While it first seems like James stole money from his company, the truth is shocking—Sophie was the one who took the money, and James has been protecting her.
Baden is also investigating James for financial crimes. He believes James wired $3.1 million to a hitman who pushed Sophie off the ferry. But Sophie finds out that the money actually went to an account under the name Tess Caldwell. This discovery brings back memories of her real identity.
Sophie tries to tell Baden that James is not the one who stole the money, but he refuses to believe her. However, he is also keeping secrets. Sophie learns that James’s business associate, Harrison (François Arnaud), hired Baden to investigate her. What was supposed to be an assignment turned into something more—Baden fell deeply in love with Sophie, which complicates everything.
Towards the end of the season, tensions rise between James and Baden. They get into a heated argument in public. Soon after, Baden is found murdered in his apartment.
Sophie immediately suspects James, but she eventually learns that Harrison ordered the murder. He wanted to stop Baden’s investigation into the company and protect their business. This shocking revelation leads to a dramatic and intense season finale.
The Season 1 Finale Brings Answers and More Questions
As the season comes to a close, a detective investigating Baden’s death questions Sophie about the day of her ferry accident. He suggests that returning to the scene might help her remember lost memories.
Later, Sophie goes for a run and leaves her belongings on a bridge. The police find them and inform James, making him believe that Sophie has taken her own life. It looks like she has carefully planned a goodbye, leading James and Caroline to mourn her loss.
Caroline visits James, and they both try to come to terms with Sophie’s supposed death. During their conversation, Caroline mentions that the $3.1 million was used to pay off a debt James owed. This statement makes James suspicious—he starts to believe that Sophie may still be alive.
His suspicions are confirmed when he discovers a cryptic video message left by Sophie. In this message, Sophie makes it clear that she knows about James’s role in Baden’s murder. She reveals that she faked her suicide to escape him.
Before she disappeared, Sophie unlocked important memories. While taking a bath, she dunked her head underwater, which helped her recall details from her past. She found a key sewn into the clothes she was wearing on the day of the ferry accident.
This clue led her to a storage unit. Inside, she found a duffle bag filled with cash and a passport with the name Tess Caldwell. The truth became clear—her real name was Tess, not Sophie.
Accepting the reality of her past and James’s lies, Sophie makes a bold decision. She leaves James behind to learn more about who she truly is. But James refuses to let her go so easily. He leaves her a voicemail, warning her that her past is dangerous and that he is coming to find her.
The season ends with Sophie arriving in London. There, she meets a woman from her memories who calls her Tess. This cliffhanger leaves viewers eager to learn what happens next when Season 2 begins.
