Carrey shared with Us Weekly that his role as the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas was far more demanding. He recalled the intense training he underwent to endure the extensive makeup, which included full facial prosthetics, green hair, and yellow contacts. The actor had to train with a specialist who teaches CIA operatives how to withstand torture, helping him cope with the discomfort. For Carrey, the Grinch was undoubtedly the toughest role in terms of makeup challenges.
Before the Grinch, Carrey had another memorable green character in The Mask (1994), where he transformed into a green-faced superhero after donning a magical mask. Reflecting on this experience, Carrey explained that the prep for The Mask was intense, but not as difficult as his time in the Grinch costume. He was well-prepared by his experience with that earlier role, which helped him tackle the challenges of playing the Grinch.
Carrey’s experience in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was much smoother. In this latest film, he portrays both Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik. While both characters share a similar bald look and mustache, Carrey also wears old-age makeup to distinguish the two. Despite the complexity of the two roles, Carrey praised the makeup team, especially Mark Coulier, for making the process as simple and enjoyable as possible. Carrey mentioned the fun atmosphere on set, making the experience memorable for him.
In a behind-the-scenes video, Carrey revealed that the makeup process for Sonic 3 was one of the most “zany” of his career. The film, released on December 20, 2024, features the Robotniks teaming up with Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves, to take down Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and his friends. Carrey’s enthusiasm for the project is evident, as he describes the entire process as a blast.
When asked where Dr. Robotnik ranks among the greatest film villains, Carrey believes his character would place first or second. He describes Robotnik as “the most dangerous kind of human being,” a genius with a bitter heart and no love to give. This complex portrayal of villainy is one of the standout aspects of Carrey’s performance in the Sonic franchise.
Carrey also praised his co-stars, particularly Ben Schwartz, for his comedic timing and exceptional performance as Sonic. He also expressed admiration for other cast members, including Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Keanu Reeves, and Idris Elba. Carrey highlighted the growing creative energy surrounding the production, making it an exciting and dynamic project for all involved.
