The teaser trailer for “Joker: Folie à Deux” reveals Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in their chaotic prime.
Offering fans an extended moment into the sequel to 2019’s “Joker,” the first trailer’s release on Tuesday night stirred anticipation.
Warner Bros. and DC Studios primed audiences for the forthcoming full trailer of “Joker: Folie à Deux” earlier that Tuesday by revealing 27 seconds of footage.
In the fleeting initial clip, Joaquin Phoenix‘s Arthur Fleck—aka Joker—stands immobile amidst what seems to be a prison yard, engulfed in a downpour, his laughter echoing manically.
“Joker: Folie à Deux” stands out among the studio’s 2024 movie lineup showcased at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The film is set to hit theaters on October 4th.
Naturally, the teaser trailer prominently showcases the dynamic between Arthur/Joker and Harley Quinn (portrayed by Lady Gaga), illustrating their initial encounter within the confines of the institution.
As their connection solidifies, they make a daring escape from the facility, unleashing chaos upon the world.
Lady Gaga Brings Music To Joker’s Demented World
In DC’s Batman universe, the Joker has long stood as the iconic nemesis of the Caped Crusader, while Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn has evolved into an antihero across DC Studios’ “Suicide Squad” movies and “Birds of Prey.”
With “Joker: Folie à Deux,” there’s a clear intention to differentiate itself from Robbie’s rendition by infusing the Joker’s twisted world with musical elements.
The strategic casting of pop sensation Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn hints at a departure from previous interpretations.
In the trailer, Arthur Fleck/Joker articulates the significance of music in their story, set against the backdrop of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s timeless melody, “What the World Needs Now,” underscoring the film’s unique approach.
“We use music to make us whole … To balance the fractures within ourselves,” Fleck says at the beginning of the trailer.
The extent of “Joker: Folie à Deux” as a movie musical spectacle remains to be fully revealed. However, music undeniably holds a significant role in the sequel’s narrative.
According to a source, the film will feature 15 cover tunes, with the possibility of more original songs being incorporated.
Given Lady Gaga’s track record, it wouldn’t be surprising if Warner Bros., DC Studios, and director Todd Phillips opt to include at least one original song in “Joker: Folie à Deux.”
After all, Lady Gaga’s Oscar-winning contribution to “A Star Is Born” with “Shallow” highlights her prowess in this area, complemented by her compelling performance alongside Bradley Cooper.
Notably, Lady Gaga isn’t the sole Oscar winner in “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Joaquin Phoenix, recipient of the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal in the first “Joker” movie, further enhances the film’s star-studded lineup.
