The May issue of Kadokawa’s Young Ace magazine announced on Thursday that Haruto Umezawa will debut a new manga titled “Menace” in the magazine’s upcoming issue on May 2.
The manga revolves around Teruya, a rebellious teenage boy entangled in gang fights who decides to leave his gang behind for the sake of his beloved Aimi. As part of his departure from the gang, he endures a grueling “retirement ritual” where he is severely beaten by his former comrades.
Following the ordeal, he awakens to find himself afflicted with amnesia, devoid even of his own identity. In this state of confusion, he encounters a peculiar alien creature.
Umezawa’s journey in manga began with the publication of the “Hareluya” one-shot manga in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump Summer Special magazine back in 1991. The success of this one-shot led to its serialization in 1992 in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, running for a total of 10 chapters.
Subsequently, Umezawa went on to create “HARELUYA II BØY” in the same year. This manga reimagined the original story and enjoyed a serialized run in Weekly Shonen Jump until 1999, spanning 33 volumes.
The popularity of “HARELUYA II BØY” also paved the way for a 1997 television anime adaptation, which was licensed by Sentai Filmworks in 2021 and made available for streaming on HIDIVE.
