South Carolina’s Kamilla Cardoso played a pivotal role in guiding her team to the national championship game despite sustaining a right knee injury during the first Final Four matchup on Friday.
In a dominant performance, the Gamecocks secured a convincing 78-59 victory against the Wolfpack, with Cardoso contributing significantly.
She showcased her prowess by tallying 22 points on an impressive 10-of-12 shooting from the field, in addition to grabbing 11 rebounds and blocking two shots.
Following her injury in the second quarter, Cardoso demonstrated resilience by returning to the court after halftime, sporting a substantial wrap on her injured leg.
Despite visible discomfort, she persevered, visibly improving in mobility as the game progressed.
Cardoso commenced the fourth quarter from the bench, equipped with a brace atop the sleeve, and also utilized the bike during breaks.
Standing at 6-foot-7, the center had already amassed an impressive 16 points in just 15 minutes of play, contributing significantly to South Carolina’s narrow 32-31 halftime lead before her unfortunate injury.
Despite visibly struggling, she persisted for two more trips down the court, eventually fouling with 1:39 remaining, likely to facilitate her exit from the game.
Shortly after, she limped off the court and promptly made her way back to the locker room.
Recognized as one of the nation’s top defensive players, she has notably enhanced her offensive capabilities, with her imposing size posing a formidable challenge for opponents on both ends of the court.
Her defensive presence alone deters opposing teams from driving to the rim or attempting shots in the paint, as she possesses the ability to alter or block their attempts.
Throughout the season, Cardoso has showcased her versatility in 31 games, boasting impressive averages of 14.1 points on 58.9% shooting, 9.4 rebounds, 2.4 blocks, and 2.1 assists per game.
On April 1, Cardoso announced her decision to declare for the WNBA draft.
