In the aftermath of a failed sales tax vote in Jackson County, Missouri, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson is advocating for the return of the Kansas City Chiefs to Dallas, where the franchise was originally founded in 1960 before relocating to Kansas City in 1963.
The failed sales tax initiative, which would have facilitated significant upgrades to Arrowhead Stadium and the construction of a new downtown stadium for the MLB’s Royals, has prompted the Chiefs and Royals to explore alternative avenues for financial support.
Mayor Johnson expressed his support for the Chiefs’ potential return to Dallas, citing the city’s robust sports culture and unwavering passion for football. He emphasized Dallas’s status as a top sports city in the United States and highlighted its capacity to accommodate a second NFL team.
Speculation Mounts: Could the Chiefs Move to Dallas?
“Dallas was named the top sports city in the United States because we play to win,” Mayor Johnson stated in an interview with The Dallas Morning News. “Our market is big enough, growing enough, and loves football more than enough to support a second NFL team especially a franchise (and an owner) with deep roots here.”
At present, the notion of the Chiefs relocating to Dallas remains speculative, yet it presents compelling reasons. Firstly, Texas boasts a fervent football culture, particularly in Dallas, where football enjoys deep-rooted passion, epitomized by the Cowboys’ stronghold.
Moreover, Dallas offers a feasible venue in the Cotton Bowl, historically home to the Dallas Texans, predecessor to the Kansas City Chiefs, during the early 1960s.
While Johnson has expressed his stance, it would be intriguing to gauge Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ perspective on potentially sharing a city with the reigning Super Bowl champions. Should this possibility materialize in the future, Jones is likely to vocalize his thoughts publicly.
Should the Chiefs make Dallas their new home, it would undoubtedly intensify pressure on Jones to deliver a championship. As the Chiefs aim to secure an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl victory, the Cowboys, despite recent successes, grapple with a prolonged Super Bowl drought spanning 28 years.
