A New York judge has rejected Donald Trump‘s plea to postpone his April 15 trial regarding hush money paid to a porn star, despite the former president’s ongoing bid to secure presidential immunity in a separate criminal case. The decision comes amidst anticipation of the Supreme Court’s review of Trump’s claim on April 25.
In the New York case, defense lawyers sought a delay, arguing that evidence of statements made by Trump during his presidency could affect the trial.
However, Judge Juan Merchan ruled against the delay, citing Trump’s delay in raising the immunity claim.
Trump’s lawyer, Todd Blanche, declined to comment on the ruling. Trump, facing four criminal indictments, including falsifying business records related to payments to Stormy Daniels, has pleaded not guilty.
The trial could proceed as the only one before the upcoming election, amidst Trump’s requests for delay due to biased media coverage. Prosecutors oppose the delay, asserting their ability to select impartial jurors.
Trump’s legal battles extend beyond New York, including a case in Georgia over election interference and a federal case in Florida concerning the handling of government documents. Despite the legal turmoil, no US president has previously faced a criminal trial.
