In the upcoming 2024 season, Michael Gallup will not be donning the Dallas Cowboys’ uniform. The team has granted Gallup permission to explore potential trade options as the free agency season approaches. If a suitable trade partner is not found, the Cowboys are expected to release the veteran wide receiver.
The decision to part ways with Gallup is primarily driven by financial considerations, as the Cowboys are currently dealing with limited cap space, with just over $2.2 million available. Gallup carries a cap hit of $13.85 million, making it necessary for the team to make adjustments to their financial structure.
Despite the financial constraints, Gallup is likely to draw interest from multiple teams in the league. Adjustments to his salary may be necessary for a potential trade. Teams like the Steelers, who recently released Allen Robinson II, and the Bengals, who are not expected to re-sign Tyler Boyd, could be among those interested.
Gallup spent six seasons with the Cowboys, amassing 266 receptions for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns. In the 2023 season, he recorded 34 receptions for 418 yards and two touchdowns. His most prolific season came in 2019, with 66 receptions for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns.
With Gallup’s departure, the Cowboys will be on the lookout for a new wide receiver, likely exploring options in both free agency and the upcoming NFL draft in April.
