The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes was awarded Anime Movie of the Year at the 10th Anime Trending Awards.
This win signifies director Tomohisa Taguchi’s second achievement at the event, following his previous recognition for his work on “Akudama Drive” at the 2021 Anime Trending Awards.
The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes” surprised everyone by beating Makoto Shinkai’s highly praised Suzume with 144 more votes, landing in the top spot for Anime Movie of the Year.
The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes” took the top spot with 9,716 votes, followed closely by “Suzume” with 9,572 votes.
The other nominees for Anime Movie of the Year were “Kaguya-sama: Love is War – The First Kiss That Never Ends” with 8,648 votes, “Laid-Back Camp Movie” with 6,882 votes.
“Boku ga Aishita Subete no Kimi e” with 6,753 votes, “Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san The Movie” with 6,495 votes, “Inu-Oh” with 3,056 votes, “Goodbye, Don Glees!” with 1,915 votes, and “Backflip!! The Movie” with 1,112 votes.
Taguchi directed and wrote the screenplay for “The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes.” Tomomi Yabuki, known for their work on “Pompo: The Cinephile,” served as the character designer and chief animation director, while Harumi Fuuki, from “The Deer King,” composed the music. CLAP handled the film’s animation production.
The main voice cast for the film includes Oji Suzuka as Kaoru Tono, Marie Iitoyo as Anzu Hanashiro, Tasuku Hatanaka as Shouhei Kaga, Arisa Komiya as Koharu Kawasaki, Haruka Terui as Mr.
Hamamoto, Rikiya Koyama as Kaoru’s Father, and Seiran Kobayashi as Karen Touno.
The anime film is based on the original light novel, written by Mei Hachimoku and illustrated by Kukka. The novel was published by Shogakukan under the Gagaga Bunko label on July 18, 2019.
It received recognition by winning the Gagaga Award and the Special Judges Award at the 13th Shogakukan Light Novel Awards.
Following its success, a manga adaptation titled “The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes: Ultramarine” by Koudon was released in 2020.
Both the light novel and manga adaptation were licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment for an English release in 2022.
Sentai Filmworks showed the film in U.S. theaters on November 3, 2023, and later made it available on its HIDIVE streaming service starting January 2, 2024.
Plot
Kaoru Tono heard a rumor about the Urashima Tunnel, it can make your deepest wish come true, but it takes years of your life in return.
One night, Kaoru finds himself in front of a tunnel that matches the rumor. He thinks of his lost sister, Karen.
To his surprise, new student Anzu Hanashiro offers to help him test the tunnel. But what does she want from Kaoru? And what will he have left when the tunnel is done with him
