As Klay Thompson faces a potential shift to a bench role in the later stages of his career, Jamal Crawford, a three-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year, offered some advice to the Golden State Warriors player. Thompson recently experienced coming off the bench for the first time since his rookie season and delivered an impressive performance, scoring 35 points in a game against the Utah Jazz.
Crawford, recognizing the challenge of adjusting to a new role, emphasized the importance of embracing the change. He reached out to Thompson before the transition, highlighting that Thompson’s battle is internal, given his legendary status and past achievements.
Despite facing injuries and struggles during the 2023-24 season, Thompson continues to average 17 points. Crawford encouraged him to see the opportunity as a chance for a new lease on his career and to embrace the challenge of contributing in a different role.
Crawford also highlighted the advantages of Thompson assuming a reduced role. With the offense centered around him when he takes the court, Thompson may experience less pressure and play more freely, potentially leading to improved performance.
Offering advice, Crawford said, “Forget off the bench or starting. You’re gonna have better numbers doing this than you’re doing it right now. You may have more fun. Enjoy this s–t. … Enjoy it because it goes so fast, and you’ve earned that.”
After the recent game against the Jazz, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr commended Thompson’s professional handling of the situation.
“I thought he handled everything beautifully, the way he came out — determined, competitive,” Kerr said. “That’s difficult, but Klay’s a champion. He’s one of the most competitive people I’ve ever met. He responded accordingly, and played a great, great game.”
The Warriors are set to face the Los Angeles Lakers at home on Thursday night, providing an opportunity to observe if Thompson continues to thrive in his adjusted role.
