As speculation surrounded Eric Bieniemy’s coaching future with the Washington Commanders, he made a noteworthy visit to the Kansas City Chiefs during their Super Bowl campaign. Prior to the AFC championship game, Bieniemy participated in Chiefs meetings and engaged with the offense, witnessing Kansas City’s subsequent victory over the Baltimore Ravens with a score of 17-10.
Having served as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, Bieniemy secured two Super Bowls with Kansas City before accepting the role of offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2023. However, with Ron Rivera ousted and Dan Quinn taking charge as the new head coach, Washington opted not to retain Bieniemy, subsequently replacing him with newly hired Kliff Kingsbury.
While Bieniemy’s coaching future remains uncertain, Chiefs coach Andy Reid expressed on Wednesday that he still has promising coaching opportunities. Reid stated, “He talked to the offensive guys and hung out with us… I would tell you his coaching future is great. I’m obviously a big fan of his and I know the things he can do.”
During Bieniemy’s tenure as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, the team led the NFL in both points per game (30.1) and yards per game (406.2). The Chiefs boasted the best record in the NFL during this period, going 64-18, making five conference championship game appearances, and securing two Super Bowl titles in the five years Bieniemy led the offense.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes also achieved remarkable success with Bieniemy as the offensive coordinator, leading the league in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and having the highest passer rating from 2018 to 2022. Although Bieniemy’s stint in Washington was brief, opportunities for his return to coaching in 2024 are still open. While Reid refrained from commenting on whether Bieniemy might rejoin his staff, reports indicate that Bieniemy has interviewed for coaching positions in recent weeks.
