The cause of death for Carl Weathers, the beloved actor known for his roles in movies like “Rocky” and “Predator,” has been disclosed.
Carl Weathers, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in films like “Rocky” and “Predator,” passed away at the age of 76 on February 2nd, as confirmed by his family. The cause of death, as revealed in a death certificate obtained by The Blast, was “atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.”
The certificate also detailed that Weathers was at his residence in Venice, California, when he passed away at 12:18 a.m. local time earlier this month. Investigators classified the manner of death as “natural,” acknowledging his long-standing battle with heart disease.
Additionally, the document noted that Weathers’ son, Matthew Weathers, was the individual who alerted authorities to his father’s passing.
Throughout his career, Carl Weathers left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry with his memorable performances on both the big and small screens.
From his portrayal of Apollo Creed in the “Rocky” series to his recent roles in popular television shows like “The Mandalorian,” Weathers captivated audiences with his talent and charisma.

The Blast reported that Weathers’ family will take home his ashes following his cremation.
Weathers’ family announced his death in a statement on Feb. 2, noting that the late Rocky and Predator actor “died peacefully in his sleep”, the preceding day.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers,” the family said in its statement.
“Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts, and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner and friend,” the statement added.
The actor co-starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987’s Predator. Most recently, he portrayed the character Greef Karga in the Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, earning an Emmy Award nomination in 2021. Weathers also voiced a character in Toy Story 4 and had a recurring role in all three of Dick Wolf’s NBC Chicago series in recent years.
Stallone, 77, was one of several celebrities to pay tribute to Weathers after his passing.
“We lost a legend yesterday,” the actor and filmmaker wrote on Instagram, alongside an emotional tribute video.
“My life was forever changed for the better the day I met Carl Weathers. Rest in power and keep punching.”
The actor was also recognized for his portrayal of Chubbs in Adam Sandler’s 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore, and for depicting a fictionalized version of himself on Arrested Development.
“A true great man. Great dad. Great actor. Great athlete,” Sandler, 57, wrote in his tribute to Weathers on Instagram. “So much fun to be around always.”
