The conclusion of the second season of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime adaptation left several major storylines unresolved and ended on a cliffhanger with the surprise return of Yuta Okkotsu, the original protagonist from the manga’s prequel volume 0.
Yuta’s comeback after being absent for so long is exciting for readers of the manga, as he is expected to play an important role going forward.
However, his journey to Africa prior to the events of the season has often been overlooked by fans.
Despite Yuta’s immense power in defeating the antagonist Geto alone, he was intentionally written to be away during the catastrophic Shibuya Incident arc.
This was likely done by the author to allow the main characters to develop without relying on Yuta to quickly resolve the conflict.
Now with Yuta back in Japan, his relationships and history with characters like Gojo and Geto can be further explored.
And with the jujutsu world still recovering after recent upheavals, Yuta’s role in shaping the path forward is highly anticipated.
Yuta’s Training in Africa Is A Gamechanger
Yuta’s journey to Africa prior to the events of the season served an important purpose in the story – to train him to become an even stronger jujutsu sorcerer.
His unique ability to copy other Cursed Techniques made Africa an ideal location to learn from sorcerers there, like Miguel.
Miguel was crucial to Yuta’s development due to his knowledge of the region and his deal with Gojo after their fight.
Training under Miguel allowed Yuta to gain multiple new techniques and return to Japan as a more capable fighter, as evidenced by his feats in the manga since then.
In addition to recovering Rika, who he thought had sacrificed herself against Geto, Yuta obtained a powerful African talisman called the Black Rope during this period.
This tool enabled him to negate Cursed Energy, intriguing Gojo with its potential. Gojo likely recognized the benefits of Yuta traveling with Miguel to acquire this and other skills, explaining Yuta’s notable absence during the catastrophic Shibuya Incident.
Now back in Japan, Yuta has grown tremendously as a sorcerer. With new abilities and relationships, his role moving forward and his impact on the jujutsu world are highly anticipated.
Yuta’s Unique Abilities
An interesting fact is that many of Yuta’s abilities were introduced in volume 0 of the manga before the author Gege Akutami had planned to continue the story beyond that miniseries.
At that time, concepts like Domain Expansions and Reverse Cursed Techniques didn’t exist yet.
As a result, Yuta has a very rare and unique skill set in the series. His capacity to copy almost any Cursed Technique was devised when Akutami didn’t have an established battle system.
Additionally, Yuta’s childhood friend Rika becoming a powerful Cursed entity forever bound to him occurred before planned power systems.
These unprecedented abilities make Yuta stand out, as he was created before the author could develop a magic system with defined limitations.
Now as the story progresses much further, Yuta returns with powers that provide him great flexibility compared to other jujutsu sorcerers.
His role moving forward will likely take advantage of these distinctive talents originating from his introduction in the undeveloped early stages of the manga.
More About Jujutsu Kaisen
Yuji Itadori is a supernaturally athletic high school student in Sendai who is encouraged by his dying grandfather to always help people and be surrounded by loved ones when he dies.
When some friends accidentally unseal a cursed talisman, Yuji swallows it to protect a sorcerer named Megumi Fushiguro, becoming the vessel of the evil spirit Ryomen Sukuna.
All sorcerers are obliged to exorcise Sukuna, but Megumi’s teacher Satoru Gojo sees that Yuji retains bodily control and proposes training him to consume Sukuna’s 20 fingers and destroy the curse.
However, cursed spirits like Mahito and the resurrected dark sorcerer Suguru Geto, who was executed by Gojo a year prior, are plotting attacks on jujutsu sorcerers.
Gojo partners Yuji with Megumi and Nobara Kugisaki for training, but Sukuna forcibly takes over during a mission until Yuji allows them both to be killed.
Sukuna then revives Yuji, having taken an interest in Megumi’s potential. Gojo hides Yuji’s return so he can continue training.
