The Defense Department has identified the three US soldiers killed in the drone attack on a US military outpost in Jordan. The victims are Sgt. William Rivers, 46, of Carrollton, Georgia; Specialist Kennedy Sanders, 24, of Waycross, Georgia; and Specialist Breonna Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia.
All were assigned to the 718th Engineer Company, a US Army Reserve unit based out of Fort Moore, Georgia. The attack resulted in over 40 injuries, and more casualties are possible. The drone struck a housing facility on the base, where many service members were asleep, leading to a high number of casualties.
Eight personnel medically evacuated were taken to Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center. Three will be transported to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center for follow-on care, while the other five are expected to return to duty after being assessed for mild traumatic brain injuries.
The drone approached the US military outpost, Tower 22, at the same time as an American drone, causing uncertainty and delaying the US response. The enemy drone followed the American one, flying low, potentially evading the base’s air defenses. The US is still assessing the drone’s point of origin.
The attack, attributed to an Iran-backed militia group, marks a significant escalation in a series of attacks on US and coalition forces since October. The Biden administration is working to determine the specific group responsible, with indications pointing to support from Kataib Hezbollah.
