On Thursday night, the Los Angeles Kings were defeated 2-1 by the Nashville Predators, who were led by goals from Ryan O’Reilly and Gustav Nyquist.
The Predators won for the third time in four games behind 33 saves from Juuse Saros and an assist from Roman Josi for the fifth straight game.
O’Reilly said the opponents brought the game on very early, and they were on their heels, he thought Juice bailed on them, but slowly they got the game going. It was a playoff-style game, fast and heavy, it was a big win for them.
With a loss for the tenth time in eleven games, the Kings were led by Drew Doughty and David Rittich with 31 saves.
Coach Todd McLellan said, they fixed one area in the game and did not give up a lot, he thought that Rittich played well. You have to score goals to win the game. With that, they can win any game.
Nyquist put the Predators up
With 6:20 remaining in the second, Nyquist gave the Predators a 2-1 lead by tipping in Luke Schenn’s shot with his pad save. Doughty’s power-play goal had negated O’Reilly’s tip while the man advantage was in play.
Nyquist said, this is what he was hoping for, they got a good shot by Schenner, it is one of those pucks that comes straight to the stick, and you just shoot the shot.
Redirecting Josi’s shot, O’Reilly recorded his eighth assist in a five-game stretch. For the ninth consecutive season, not counting the 2021 campaign that was cut short due to COVID-19—he has at least 30 assists.
O’Reilly said, if you talk about the power play then they have not been very good as of late, they should get more simple and get more pucks to the net and win the games.
Rob Blake gave McLellan a vote of confidence
Amid the Kings’ slump, hours after general manager Rob Blake offered McLellan a vote of confidence, some of the same problems that have characterized the current run reappeared.
For the third time in four games, Los Angeles was unable to score at even strength, and McLellan believes that his guys’ lack of offensive mindset is having an impact on how they play.
McLellan said, they had 3-on-2s, a 4-on-2, and some other entries where they gargled the puck, earlier in the year those were the nice plays that they made, a little bit of stress and tension is there, but they had to fight through it.
Doughty did manage to reach double digits in goals for the first time since 2017–18, and he also scored for the third time in five games.
Speaking before the Kings’ season reached the halfway mark, Blake promised to support McLellan, who is in his fifth season and had made it to the postseason the previous two years. Blake said that he’s going to trust players and the leadership to get out of it.
