Karen DeBoer’s foray into baseball was short-lived, and he soon found his way back to his true passion: soccer. After returning to Sioux Falls, he began his coaching career, taking an assistant coaching position at Washington High School.
After two years of valuable coaching experience at the high school level, DeBoer returned to the University of Sioux Falls and became the offensive coordinator under former coach Bob Young.
DeBoer held the position for four years, and as a result of his dedication and expertise, he was promoted to head coach on December 1, 2004, following Young’s resignation.
While in Sioux Falls, DeBoer exchanged vows with Nicole DeBoer. During his five-year tenure as head coach, DeBoer left an indelible mark on the program, posting an impressive 67-3 record. Most notably, he led the team to three NAIA National Championships in the year 2006, 2008 and 2009.
The only blemish on DeBoer’s coaching record are two losses to the Carroll Fighting Saints in 2005 and 2007 (the team that won the national championship in each year).
Wanting a new challenge, DeBoer decided to make his move in 2010 and accepted the role of offensive coordinator at Southern Illinois. Although he temporarily stepped down as head coach, he continued to make significant contributions to his team.
That detour also included notable stints at Eastern Michigan, Fresno State and Indiana, where he excelled as an offensive coordinator and ultimately earned the head coaching position in 2020. returned to.
