Sports brands are always on the lookout for an exciting face to sponsor, but for Nike, one of its best partnerships has always been with Eldrick Tont Woods, who most of us know as Tiger Woods. Together, Nike and Tiger Woods had one of the most lucrative partnerships ever seen in golf or even sports in general.
When Tiger started appearing in golf tournaments, he immediately became a highly marketable athlete who would increase the sales of whatever he wore. Many companies like American Express, Accenture, & General Motors jumped in with their endorsement deals, but it was Nike that dealt with the partnership in the best way possible.
After Wood’s debut in 1996, he was endorsed by Nike, but soon afterward, the deal was extended for up to five years and featured a contract extension of almost $105 million. This was a much higher price than any other sportsman was being paid in the golf industry, but since Tiger Woods was a prominent figure in the sport, the deal eventually made sense.
Tiger was single-handedly responsible for turning Nike’s golf start-up into a fully successful endeavor that made both of them millions of dollars. Whenever Tiger would appear for a tournament or advertisement, he almost always chose to wear Nike clothing.
Soon enough, Nike Golf and Tiger Woods became synonymous with each other, and their partnership led to the start of an iconic era for Golf. Now after almost 3 decades, Woods revealed that he and Nike would no longer be working together. Nike even paid tribute to their successful partnership through an advertisement featuring the match where Woods wore Nike in one of his best matches of all time.
Why Did Tiger Woods Leave Nike?
Nike Golf was only so successful because Tiger Wood used its apparel all the time, so it’s surprising to see both of them splitting after many years of working together. The year 2024 is turning out to be the year where iconic partnerships and deals are coming to an end out of nowhere.
While many assume Nike decided to end its partnership with Woods because of the expenses, the most likely reason they decided to split up is entirely different.
When Nike first approached Tiger Woods to endorse him back in the ’90s, he was at the start of his career and played an important role in the sport as one of the only people of color to be competing at several tournaments every month.
Thanks to his dad, Tiger had been a golf prodigy, and when he finally got the chance to participate in something significant when he was old enough, many brands knew sponsoring him and forming a partnership would be highly lucrative. This was the same time Nike was experimenting with its golf apparel but wasn’t making any money out of it.
Once Tiger and Nike signed contracts worth millions, both his legacy in the sport and the brand’s sales rate increased substantially. With the prevalence of golf-specific brands these days, Nike no longer feels the need to compete in the category and is decreasing the production of all of its golf equipment and apparel.
Nike first decided to cut back on golf equipment production back in 2016, but the partnership with Woods wasn’t affected by it. Woods was also involved in dramatic allegations and infidelity scandals, yet the Nike endorsements continued.
The reason the partnership ended seems to be because Nike decided to stop making golf-based clothing or equipment on a large scale. Something similar happened to another popular athlete, Roger Federer, when Nike decided to cut their 24-year partnership.
Tiger Woods: Who Will The Golf Prodigy Partner With Now?
After the amicable and mutual decision to end their years-long contract, Tiger and Nike seem to be looking forward to a better future in sports. Tiger will continue to appear in PGA Tours once in a while, and this could give the chance for another major golf apparel company to sign another million-dollar deal with him.

He’s already been spotted wearing other brands like Footjoy shoes, so there’s a high possibility that a new deal could come in and take golf fashion to another level soon.
No brand has revealed anything about making a deal with Woods after the announcement yet. For now, Tiger Woods is going to be focusing on spending time with his son, Charlie, and participating in golfing events whenever possible.
