A new report just confirmed they’re making another Top Gun movie, and Tom Cruise will be playing Maverick again.
This decision comes after the success of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, which was the second highest-earning movie of the year.
The legendary 1986 movie, Top Gun, has earned its place in cinematic history as a thrilling mix of excitement and charm. Set against the backdrop of the U.S. Navy’s premier fighter weapons school, the film goes beyond just showcasing aviation—it’s a heart-pounding celebration of Maverick’s daring, Iceman’s cool demeanor, and the awe-inspiring spectacle of fighter jets cutting through the skies.
Paramount has officially decided to go ahead with Top Gun 3
People are now curious about what’s going to happen with Tom Cruise’s movies at Paramount, especially Top Gun after he made a deal with Warner Bros.
Matt Belloni shared in the Puck newsletter that Paramount has officially decided to go ahead with Top Gun 3. In addition to Tom Cruise, Glen Powell, and Miles Teller will be coming back to play their roles as Hangman and Rooster.
The person who helped write the last movie, Ehren Kruger, is already working on the new script. There’s a chance that Joseph Kosinski will be back to direct. The film will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison.
Tom Cruise’s upcoming ventures along with Top Gun
The newsletter talks about how Tom Cruise’s deal with Warner Bros. affects his connection with Paramount. The deal isn’t exclusive, so Cruise can still work on Paramount projects, like Top Gun 3 and the Mission: Impossible series. While it’s hinted that Top Gun 3 might be Cruise’s next project after Mission: Impossible 8, nothing is confirmed yet, and it depends on finishing Kruger’s script.
Some sources say Cruise might not be free for a Warner Bros. project until 2025 or 2026. When that happens, there’s a chance he could do Edge of Tomorrow 2.
There are also discussions about Cruise starring in a sequel to The Firm or leading a new action movie for Warner Bros. Apart from the Warner Bros. and Paramount situation, where a merger is talked about, Cruise is still linked to Doug Liman’s space movie at Universal.
Cruise is a super famous global star, and his schedule is understandably busy. Still, the announcement of Top Gun 3 is a big deal, especially considering how unexpectedly successful the last one, Top Gun: Maverick, was, making almost $1.5 billion worldwide. So, everyone involved might prioritize making the sequel.
What could be Top Gun 3 about?
Even though the end of Maverick didn’t outright set the stage for a third movie, it left space for a natural sequel to happen. Top Gun 3’s storyline is expected to focus on a new mission for Maverick and his fellow pilots, putting character development ahead of specific details.
Maverick hinted at a potential plot when Admiral Cain suggested using drones instead of human pilots. Top Gun 3 might show Maverick and others facing off against Cain’s drones, trying to prove that human skills are better than machine efficiency.
Bringing back the original Top Gun crew would add a lot to the story. Since many of them didn’t return for Top Gun 2, a plot involving a battle against machines is the perfect chance for the original fighter pilot team to reunite.
This not only pays tribute to the first movie but also adds to the overall appeal of Top Gun 3. While the idea of replacing human pilots with drones is likely a crucial part of Top Gun 3, exactly how it fits into the story is still unknown.
The Top Gun 3 latest
After more than a year of speculation, the latest update on the highly anticipated sequel officially confirms Top Gun 3, with Tom Cruise returning to his role. Following a significant deal with Warner Bros. in January 2024, Cruise is set to come back to the Paramount project because his new agreement isn’t exclusive. However, the confirmed Top Gun 3 might face delays due to Cruise’s busy schedule.
In addition to the movie’s official confirmation, it was revealed that Miles Teller would return as Hangman, and Glen Powell would reprise his role as Rooster. The script for Top Gun 3 will be written by Ehren Kruger, the co-writer of Top Gun: Maverick, and there are rumors that director Joseph Kosinski may once again take charge of the project.
