Apple TV’s Criminal Record follows two completely different detectives who are trying to solve the same murder case. Starring Academy Award-winning Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife), this Paul Rutman show is going to be a great addition to the platform’s crime show genre.
Criminal Record’s storyline starts in contemporary London, where crime is widespread and innocent people often fall victim to something they’re not a part of. Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty is a respected employee at his job and is seasoned enough to smell the culprit from any normal crime case.
As for June Lenker, she may not have Hegarty’s decade-long experience, but she has enough determination and creative thinking to help her solve any kind of complex case that comes her way. These two detectives happen to cross paths when they receive a strange call that leads them to work together on the same case.
Peter Capaldi, the actor from Doctor Who and The Thick of It, stars as Daniel Hegarty, while Cush Jumbo plays the role of young detective June Lenker. Zoe Wanamaker stars in the role of Maureen, Charlie Creed-Miles portrays detective Tony Gilfoyle, and Cathy Tyson plays Doris Mathis.
A Thrilling Murder Mystery
June Lenker and Daniel Hegarty, two detectives, cross paths after being contacted by a strange unknown caller. These emergency calls first start with a woman claiming that her boyfriend was a murderer. The description leads June to investigate old cases, and that’s where she finds out that an inmate had been wrongfully committed for the same murder case.
June is the kind of person who would do anything to do the right thing and get someone justice. After hearing the caller talk about the murder, June tries to get her superiors to look into the case, including Daniel Hegarty, the DCI. Since she’s just a detective sergeant, no one takes June’s findings seriously.
The emergency call seems random at first, but when the headquarters receives another call from a similar-sounding woman, June decides it’s time to take things into her own hands and start investigating this murder case. Daniel picks up on the strange calls as well but decides to work through things using his way.
Both Daniel and June eventually become investigators on the same murder case, giving June a chance to win Daniel’s trust and use his reach to find out what’s going on with the woman behind the call. Criminal Record will be showcasing two different perspectives, feelings, and answers coming out of the same murder.
The murder mystery only gets more intriguing as the show goes on, as the fight between Daniel and June’s opinions becomes more obvious. To see Peter Capaldi as a detective on Criminal Record is refreshing and entertaining. Capaldi has won countless awards since the 90s, so it’s no surprise that he would be portraying the detective role so well.
Criminal Record isn’t the first time Cush will be working with Paul Rutman since she used to play the role of Bethany Whelan on the ITV show Vera. Both Jumbo and Capaldi are used to working on crime or dark dramas, so it’s going to be exciting to see them play the roles of two opposing investigators.
