Each prefecture in Japan has its own culture and fashion that can be very different from the usual trends in Tokyo. Silver Link Studios will be taking us to Japan’s northernmost prefecture, Hokkaido, and showcasing a fun yet romance-filled anime with Nobunaga Shimazaki and Ayane Sakura as the voice actors.
As the name suggests, Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable takes place in Hokkaido, where a 16-year-old Tsubasa Shiki finds himself all awkward and lonely after moving to this new place & having no local friends. Shiki’s life changes for the better when he runs into a Gyaru/Gal, a girl who follows a certain fashion subculture.
Despite the chilly winds and constant snow, this Gal, who goes by the name of Minami Fuyuki, stands in the snow with bare legs and no gloves. Although at first Shiki dislikes the way Fuyuki acts and convinces himself that she isn’t his type, he eventually starts falling for her after hanging out with her all the time.
Masayoshi Oishi performs the opening theme songs, while the voice actors include Nobunaga Shimazaki as Tsubasa Shiki, Ayne Sakura voicing Minami, Yumiri Hanamori voicing Sayuri and Reina Ueda voices Rena Natsukawa.
About The Anime
Tsubasa Shiki’s life takes a whole new turn when he moves to Hokkaido and comes across a local Gyaru who takes a liking to him. While going to his new school, Tsubasa runs into Minami Fuyuki, an extroverted, popular girl who also happens to be his classmate.
Seeing her stand in the ice-cold weather without any form of socks or gloves impresses Tsubasa, but since Minami is very outgoing, he tries to keep his distance from her. Back in Tokyo, Tsubasa was regarded as a loser and didn’t have any friends who would remember him after he was gone.
Minami studies at Kitami Hokuryo High School too, and is a follower of Gyaru culture, which is similar to the Gal culture in the US. With blonde hair, short skirts, and a cheerful personality, Minami is undeniably one of the popular girls from the school and has tons of friends.
After meeting Tsubasa, Minami develops a crush on him, considering how different he is compared to her and that he knows nothing about Hokkaido’s culture. Although Tsubasa wasn’t a fan of Minami’s personality, the fact that she was trying to be his friend moved his heart, and he realized Minami was much more than just a well-known high school gal.
With other friends like Sayuri, Rena, and Asuka in his life, the story is all about Tsubasa adjusting to his new life in Hokkaido with Minami. Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable isn’t a harem anime, but it does have many female characters that can sometimes outshine the female protagonist.
Nobunaga Shimazaki, the voice actor behind Tsubasa, is also the one who voiced characters like Yuki from Fruits Basket, Mahito from Jujutsu Kaisen, and young Shanks from One Piece. Ayane Sakura, who voices Minami, has been the voice actor behind Kaya Saimori from My Happy Marriage and Gabi from Attack On Titan.
