TMS Entertainment, Hikaru Muno, and Homura Kawamoto produced the intriguing Japanese story High Card. It’s not just a manga or novel. It’s a whole adventure! A group of gifted people composed the music, authored the story, and illustrated the characters. Studio Hibari directed it alongside Junichi Wada.
It was announced that a second season was scheduled during AnimeJapan in 2023. The opening song is by Five New Olds, and the beautiful ending song is “Hakuchūmu” (Daydream) by Raon. Finn, a clever thief who discovers unusual cards known as X-Playing Cards, is the main character of the tale. These cards are scattered around Fourland and are quite strong.
High Card, an undercover organization, enlists Finn to locate and safeguard these cards. Finn and the others work for a high-end automobile firm called Pinochle, but finding these rare cards is their main responsibility. Who’s Who, their rivals, are chasing them, so it’s a race against time to grab the cards first!
The Plot
High Card follows the story of Finn, an orphan facing the closure of his struggling orphanage. In an attempt to change his fortune, Finn stumbles into a world where regular playing cards have extraordinary powers, able to unlock hidden abilities within people.
His journey starts innocently enough at a casino but takes an unforeseen turn when he witnesses a car chase and a violent shootout, all triggered by a man’s possession of what appears to be a “lucky” card.
When Finn looks further, he discovers an undercover group known as High Card. Their goal is to gather the 52 X-Playing cards that are hidden across the realm. Those who possess these cards will be bestowed with special superhuman abilities. These cards possess the remarkable power to unveil a person’s inner characteristic or “buddy” within.
As the fifth member of High Card, Finn is brought in to accompany the team on a perilous quest to retrieve these powerful cards. Working secretly, the squad assumes the identity of the staff of the upscale automaker Pinochle, carrying out direct orders from the king of Fourland.
Their path is not easy, though. Who’s Who, a rival automaker determined to unseat Pinochle, and the Klondikes, a well-known Mafia family, are two formidable opponents for High Card. Ideas of justice, desire, and retaliation could spark a chaotic confrontation that results in violence.

The players have a straightforward yet deep slogan that guides them through the chaos: “All you need in life are manners, dignity, and the will to bet on your own life.” This proverb captures the great stakes and risks that come with guiding High Card through a perilous path where equal groups vie for control of the potent cards.
An additional element of intrigue is added when the action takes place against the opulent backdrop of the Pinochle empire. Three things are at stake: the existence of High Card itself, the future of Finn’s orphanage, and the equilibrium of power in Fourland. In the thrilling adventure High Card, Finn, and his new friends travel to a realm where simple playing cards hold the secret to amazing powers.
Ending Explained
The Season 1 finale of “High Card” took us on a rollercoaster ride as Klondike’s terrorists stormed the palace, setting the stage for an intense showdown. High Card members bravely defended against the threat, but things took a turn when Finn got knocked out by some Pinochle guys, trying to keep him from messing with their plan to find Chris.
Sugar, Finn’s friend, hurried to the hospital when she heard about his situation. Owen’s men were carrying Finn away, but Finn took advantage of the chaos to sneakily hijack Sugar’s car, not realizing that Chelsea was in the backseat. At the same time, Ban, another character, used his card’s power to wipe out a police checkpoint, saying the cards should be used for their reasons.
Finn and Chelsea figured out that Chris was taking Michel, someone, important, to the Ferris wheel from a previous date. Their plans hit a snag when Nhat, one of the bad guys, wrecked their car, forcing them to escape on foot.
Chelsea got hurt during their getaway, but Wendy, who was possessed by Love-P, stepped in to fight Nhat. With some help from Sugar and Greg, Love-P managed to land a big hit on Nhat but then got knocked out by falling debris caused by Greg. Fast forward three days, and things settled down.
Martial law in Shield was lifted, and we learned that Chris’s risky move with the cards helped heal his sister, though he only lost half of his life instead of all of it. Both Finn and Chris got their jobs back at Pinochle, but Chris got demoted under Finn as a punishment. Meanwhile, in another part of the story, Nhat meets a dark fate, getting impaled by a black knight’s sword.
