A new series called Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale will premiere in 2024 at Sundance Now and AMC Plus. It will join an outstanding slate of programming at AMC Networks that includes Nautilus, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, and Season 2 of Interview with the Vampire.
The setting of Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale is a modern world where witchcraft is accepted. The story is set in the picturesque English town of Sanctuary, where witches have coexisted peacefully as respected members of society for hundreds of years.
The protagonist of the tale is Sanctuary’s resident witch, Sarah Fenn (Elaine Cassidy), whom the community turns to for help when more traditional approaches fail. Dan Whithall, a local teenage rugby star, passes away tragically in what appears to be an accident.
His passing highlights the horrifying undertone of mistrust and anxiety that Sarah and her teenage daughter Harper (Hazel Doupe) must deal with. The deceased boy’s mother, Abigail (Amy de Bhrun), who was formerly Sarah’s best friend, is devastated and, at whatever cost, begins a contemporary witch hunt to exact “justice” for her son’s death.

Fear is usually the foundation of witch hunts, real or imagined. dread of the unfamiliar, dread of the non-Christian, and fear of everything that is too unusual or odd. Furthermore, stories about women have historically been present, whether set in 17th-century America or 14th-century Europe.
Witch hunts have also never truly gone out of style, whether the goals are to settle differences with neighbours, punish women who are thought to be too unusual for society’s tastes, deprive them of their property, or blame them for unexplainable acts of God like sick animals or bad crops.
However, what if we were living in a different reality? The central query of Sanctuary, an upcoming series on Sundance Now, is this: In A Witch’s Tale, a world is imagined in which female authority in general and witchcraft in particular are not simply accepted.
People who own it are respected members of their communities, and it is often celebrated. Until they aren’t, anyway. Taking place in a modern world where witchcraft is real In Sanctuary, witches reside in a sleepy English village where they have been allowed to live and work in peace for hundreds of years.
Unfortunately, evil impulses can be concealed by even the most beautiful surroundings and kind hearts, and humanity is only one sad accident away from turning back to its baser tendencies and believing that every woman in a position of authority is a threat.
The television series is a blend of family drama, murder mystery, and cautionary tales about the perils of paranoia and hidden biases, especially when it comes to how we see those who are different from us. It is based on the novel by V.V. James, which has been compared to Big Little Lies meets Practical Magic.
The plot, which takes place in the town of Sanctuary, centres on Sarah Fenn, a witch who lives there and is trusted by the locals to find solutions to issues when traditional ones have failed. Harper has never expressed any interest in witchcraft, but her ambition is for her teenage daughter to become a witch like her.
However, their little town is shattered by mistrust and terror when a tragedy happens at a high school party, killing well-known young rugby player Dan Whithall. The villagers then begin to act as they always do in such circumstances: they look for a witch to lay blame on.
