Fans have been asking questions after listening to the news of Kyle McCord leaving Ohio State. When Ryan Day discovered that Ohio State was not going to the College Football Playoff, the coach forced his first-year starter into the transfer portal.
Some people may find it surprising as the Buckeyes went 11.-1 and were unable to attend the Big Ten Championship game in Michigan by a defeat in week 12.
But this was Day’s third loss in a rival game. The coach was under a lot of pressure to do something to change the balance and path of the team, or his job could be online.
McCord threw for 3170 yards, six intercepts, and 24 touchdowns in 2023. His 83 QBR was ranked eighth among signal callers nationally. He totaled 229 passes in 348 attempts which is about 65% accuracy and 9.1 pass per yard was his average, his running was for -65 yards.
He had victories in 2 of the top ten opponents: one in week 4 against Notre Dame and the other in week 7 against Penn State.
Why is Kyle McCord leaving Ohio State?
It looks clear that Ryan Day is doubling in chasing the Big Ten championship and next year’s CFP run, he doesn’t think that Kyle can offer him what he needs to compete at such a level.
With players like Dillon Gabriel, Riley Leonard, and Cam Ward in the transfer portal, he believes he has better options.
If not Ohio, where is Kyle going?
Other teams are in search of quarterbacks with their leaving: USC, Washington, Notre Dame, Louisville, and Oregon. Other schools have quarterbacks, but they lack the trust of the coach or are leaving for the transfer window.
The same is with Miami with Tyler Van Dyke, Mississippi State with Will Rogers, and Duke with Riley Leonard, who all are leaving for better schools.
Auburn has Payton Thorne, but here also it looks like he is not a long-term option for the Tigers.
McCord may stay in the big ten, migrating to the western division to Iowa which has McNamara, but they also need to work on their offense which looked like dead rubber the year.
Who recruited Kyle?
Kyle McCord was recruited by Ryan Day as a four-star prospect out of St. Joseph Prep School in Philadelphia. Marvin Harrison Jr. And McCord teamed up to win three state championships. He even set the record for throwing 2883 yards in his sophomore year.
Why did Kyle McCord transfer to Syracuse?
According to the ESPN report, McCord’s relationship with Brown and the coaching staff was the main factor behind this transfer and represented Orange football.
He even knows Nunzio Campanile and Jeff Nixon, who currently is the NY Giant’s run game coordinator and is set to be Syravuse’s offensive coordinator in the future.
In an interview with ESPN, McCord talked about his experience on the coaching staff, which was very important for him. It was a big factor behind his decision. He just wanted to be at a place surrounded by good players.
He praised them for bringing players from Georgia and other locations. When you combine all of that, it makes an appealing destination for him to be. He also said that he knows other New Jersey area football players who are on the orange team, Alijah Clark and Denis Jaquez Jr.
He added they’re the guys he grew up playing with, being around coaches that he has known forever, he felt everything was happening at the right time.
Syracuse is looking for an opening at quarterback, it looks like Garrett Shrader will move on forward, leaving Carlos Del Rio-Wilson and Braden Davis the only scholarship quarterbacks on the team.
