In the episode that aired on December 13, 2023, Emmerdale shocked viewers by revealing new details about the beloved character Robert Sugden (played by Ryan Hawley).
For killing Lee Posner (Kris Mochrie), the man who had raped Robert’s half-sister Victoria (Isabel Hodgins), back in 2019, Robert was given a 14-year prison term.
Robert decided to file for divorce, freeing his husband Aaron Dingle (played by Danny Miller) and leaving Aaron devastated rather than waiting for him.
What is the new revelation about Robert Sugden?
It was recently revealed that on the day Robert attacked Lee, Wendy (played by Susan Cookson), Lee’s mother, had found out that her other son, Luke (Max Parker), had defended himself by striking Lee during an argument.
Victoria investigated whether Robert’s circumstances could be altered by this new information with her friend, lawyer Ethan Anderson (Emile John). They subsequently found out, though, that Robert had chosen not to press the case.
Even with this storyline’s brief reappearance and subsequent dismissal, Robert Sugden is clearly still an important character in the story. In one scene, Victoria and Aaron are talking over drinks at the Woolpack when Aaron, snooping on her phone, discovers a covert relationship between Victoria and Jacob Gallagher (played by Joe-Warren Plant).
In a heart-to-heart conversation, Aaron counseled Victoria to wait for Jacob if she felt he was “The One” and to take her time disclosing their relationship to others.
Vic noted that Aaron seemed to be speaking from personal experience after catching wind of his insightful remarks. Without making eye contact, Aaron answered with an enigmatic “maybe.”
When Victoria brought up Robert, Aaron quickly changed the subject, insisting that he hadn’t inquired about Robert’s well-being despite the fleeting moment of vulnerability.
“I know!” Victoria insisted, persisting. However, as we’re discussing “The One,” Aaron quickly shifts the subject, but it’s important to note that this is the first time Robert has been mentioned recently.
Aaron had fallen in love with Marco during the previous year, but he returned to the Dales single and with gritted teeth, still processing the loss of his late sister Liv.
Viewers are left hoping for a future reunion since it’s clear that Aaron is unable to erase his memories of his soulmate, Robert, completely. But for now, they’ll have to make do with this fleeting but heartfelt reference to Robert.
In the meantime, the village is still in disarray due to Aaron’s continuous arguments with his mother, Chas Dingle. Is there a chance that they will ever make up?
What is Emmerdale about?
The British soap opera “Emmerdale” is broadcast on ITV. The plot takes place in Emmerdale, a made-up village tucked away in the Yorkshire Dales that was originally known as Beckindale until 1994. “Emmerdale Farm” was created by Kevin Laffan and debuted on October 16, 1972.
Leeds Studios was the regular location for filming the interior scenes. The first outdoor scenes were filmed in Arncliffe, Littondale, which may have been named after the ancient Amerdale settlement in Littondale. Filming later moved to Esholt and then to a specially constructed set on the Harewood estate.
The program, which was initially scheduled to air in the afternoons for three months, ended up airing more episodes during the day until 1978. It then shifted to a prime time slot in the early evening in most regions.
A new production team brought in more dramatic storylines and a higher episode frequency in the late 1980s, along with a name change. These changes increased popularity and viewer interest, making “Emmerdale” a well-known British soap opera.
On October 10, 2011, the show made the switch to high definition. It also won the British Soap Awards’ Best British Soap category for the first time in 2016. ITV3 has been showing “classic episodes” of “Emmerdale” twice a day since January 2019.
