The popular producer Jeremy Chua has been appointed as the General Manager of the Singapore International Film Festival. The former Executive Director, Emily J Hoe, has resigned from the post, giving the opportunity to Jeremy.
He will lead the event with the SGIFF’s programming director, Thong Kay Wee. Emily was leading the film festival for the past four years including the two which was struck during the global pandemic.
But she has decided to step back from the position as she has planned to move to Australia. Singapore International Film Festival celebrates the spirit of Asian culture and heritage by promoting and championing Asian films both from home and within the region.
This year’s edition of the film festival was a great hit and is marked as the highest ticket sale since 2014. It concluded its eleven-day run from 30 November to 10 December 2023.
SGIFF wrapped with Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, which was directed by Vietnam’s Pham Thein and produced by Jeremy Chua and was awarded the Best Asian Feature film. The event also witnessed many prominent award-winning moments.
Chua has produced many movies, including A Yellow Bird, Tomorrow is a Long Time, Last Shadow at First Light, A Love Unknown, A Family Tour, and the award-winning Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell.
The Young Producer – Jeremy Chua
Jeremy Chua is a very well-known Singaporean producer and writer and has produced many award-winning feature films. In 2014, he founded a production company, Potocol, that focuses mainly on the production of independent Asian films.
He wrote and co-produced his first film, “A Yellow Bird” by K. Rajagopal, which premiered at Cannes Critics Week 2016. He has also produced many other movies by different directors, including A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery Family Tour.
His feature film Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell won the best film award at SGIFF’s closing event on 10 December 2023. Earlier, the film won the Best Film award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Chua has produced many Oscar-nominated and award-winning films. He was also an associate producer for the film Glorious Ashes, which was selected as Vietnam’s Oscar nomination.
At the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Jeremy Chua was awarded the FIAPF Award for Outstanding Contribution to Asia Pacific Cinema. He was praised for his tremendous and wonderful works in the Asian film industry and also for his bold decisions as a producer.
He collaborated with many filmmakers from different regions to bring beautiful and meaningful stories to the screen. He has been selected as the General Manager of the Singapore International Film Festival and will take charge starting the first of January 2024.
The 34th Singapore International Film Festival
The Singapore Film Festival is one of the most glorious and celebrated film festivals in the world. The 34th edition of the SGIFF brought back the royalness of the event, marking the highest ticket sale ever since 2014.
The ticket sales have increased a lot from the previous years. The festival was topped off with the Silver Screen Awards, with fifteen awards and four Special Mentions presented to the most exceptional talents.
Around 12 feature films were nominated for the Asian Feature Film Competition, and eighteen short films were nominated for the Short Film Competition.
Some of the main awards in the event include the Cinema Icon Award, the Outstanding Contribution to Southeast Asian Cinema Award, the Southeast Asian Film Lab’s Most Promising Project and Fellowship Prize, and the Young Critic Award Under the Youth Critics Program.
Around 101 films from 50 countries took part in the festival, celebrating the emerging and established talents from the Asian region. This year was very momentous as it had the highest number of films selected in the Asian Feature Film Competition.
