The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Charitable Foundation is planning to educate the judges, medical students, teachers, and police on how they can overcome the harmful bias that is happening against black women and children.
The nonprofit foundation by the couple Archewell is collaborating with the Georgetown Center on Gender Justice and Opportunity. The organization is attempting to educate the judges, that can help them rethink gender and racial stereotypes.
The program is one of the thirty-eight programs, that the organization has planned for this year, and the training will start next year. It will be extended across the US and will serve as a great training program to stop the gender and race bias against black people.
The work of Archewell has been grouped into three themes. The themes are Uplifting Communities, Building a better online world, and restoring trust in information.
The Duchess of Sussex made a statement earlier about a person in the royal family discussing the color of her child to be born. This was the talk of the town at that time. However, raising new training programs on the basis of race has reminded the people of the same.
Race Allegation by Meghan Markle
In 2021, the Duchess revealed that there were some discussions happening in the Royal Family before the birth of their child. She thinks that they will be changing the rules to deny her children prince and princess titles.
The interviewer, Winfrey, asked Duchess whether she thinks it is because of the race. Meghan replied that while she was pregnant, everyone was concerned about how dark their child would look. Also, there were conversations regarding the child’s security and titles.
But Prince Harry said that the conversation would be kept private and suggested the remark was ‘what the kids will look like?’. After the interviewer asked many times whether it was the whole family or a single person, they said they did not want to disclose it.
This has left all the family members under suspicion, and the royal family did not share much about this, which has left the viewers unable to decide whether they agree with Meghan’s concern.
Many people said that Meghan had accused the royal family of racism, and some supported her that she must have felt evil about someone commenting about her baby.
In 2023, Harry made it clear by saying that Meghan had not accused his family of racism, but they both viewed the comment to be in the context of unconscious bias. In November, a journalist published a book that revealed that King Charles III commented on Meghan and Prince Harry’s unborn child’s skin tone.
The Impact Report of 2022-2023
The report was launched in December on Archewell’s website. It contained this year’s decisions.
In the report, it says:
Inspired by the work of Rebecca Epstein at Georgetown Law and building on a previous partnership to explore adultification-bias and the inequities faced by Black girls in the justice, education and medical systems, The Archewell Foundation has partnered with the Center on Gender Justice & Opportunity to develop a groundbreaking curriculum to educate judges in overcoming harmful gender stereotypes, especially those affecting Black women and girls the most.
Some other projects include the Dinner Party Labs, which is intended to bring together young minds who are extending support to one another. There is also a baby bank, early years center, and news organizations planned to be organized by the Archewell Foundation. It mainly aims to battle against the misinformation that is spread worldwide.
A one-minute-long video was released to launch the report, showing the Duke and Duchess meeting the public. Other projects by the foundation focus on refugee women and families, hosting a parents’ summit and insight sessions about the harms caused by social media.
