Attack On Titan is one anime that has been full of twists and turns ever since it began. The anime, as well as its source material, the manga, are full of exhilarating events and twists that the fans love this series.
As the series progressed further, more and more secrets were unveiled, and at the same time, more confusion was created. However, in the end, all the mysteries were cleared out.
Recently, the final episode of the anime was released, and the fans had mixed feelings about it. Some wanted a different ending than the manga, but some fans genuinely appreciated the way the manga ended.
Both the manga and anime ended with Eren’s death, which stopped the rumbling. Mikasa was shown to visit Eren’s grave, and a scene featuring a pigeon and Mikasa was shown, which symbolized her and Eren’s connection.
Fans loved the series and were happy that the ending and the progression of the series, whilst creating new mysteries, did solve the pre-existing ones. Whilst all the mysteries were solved and understood by the fans, some fans are still confused about something.
Fans are curious about the connection between the founder, Ymir, and Mikasa Ackerman. Many understood the connection whilst some are still confused as to how the two of them are connected despite existing thousands of years apart.
Why was Mikasa chosen?
People who have read or watched Attack On Titan are well aware of who Ymir is and why she is important to the show and the plot. For those who don’t know, Ymir is the founder.
She was the first person to ever become a Titan, and it is she who started the whole thing. According to the legends in Marley, Ymir was visited by a devil-like creature who gave her the powers to turn into a Titan, and she used these powers for Eldia and to torture the Marleyans.
However, Ymir accidentally got the powers. Her family was killed by Eldians, and she was captured. One night, she helped a pig escape, and the Eldian king found out that it was her.
He set her free, only for her to be chased down. In a desperate attempt to save herself, she stepped inside a big tree and fell into a chasm. There, a mysterious creature resembling a spine merged with her.
This is how Ymir got her powers. She was the only person to have powers of all the nine titans. After Ymir got her powers, she returned to King Fritz’s side.
She was in love with Fritz and did everything he asked her to, even if she didn’t want to. Fritz was just using her, and Ymir was aware of that, but she couldn’t stop him due to love.
After her death, Ymir got stuck in the paths. She waited for over a thousand years for someone to set her free.
Mikasa and she have many similarities. Mikasa was also hopelessly in love with Eren and did things she didn’t agree to for him. She knew about his plans for genocide but didn’t kill him and tried to talk to him.
Eren and Fritz both used Ymir and Mikasa. Whilst Eren did love Mikasa, he misused the feelings she had for him. Because of this, Ymir sympathized with her. She watched Mikasa’s journey closely.
She knew that Mikasa and her journey were similar. Ymir was well aware of how Mikasa, like her, was in love with someone and would do anything for them. She considered Mikasa to be like her.
In the end, when Mikasa kills Eren, Ymir stands in the back and smiles. She was happy that someone akin to her had the strength to do something she couldn’t do.
She was glad that Mikasa could choose humanity over her feelings for Eren, and she destroyed the Titan powers and everything there.
Throughout the thousands of years, Ymir waited in the paths. All she wanted was freedom. Mikasa was the person who set her free.
Ymir chose Mikasa to set her free because both of their stories were similar. Mikasa had the strength to choose the greater good over her feelings, which, in a way, inspired Ymir and instigated her to destroy the Titans once and for all. This is why Mikasa was chosen to set Ymir free once and for all.
