The limited television series Fellow Travelers, which is based on Thomas Mallon’s novel, is a political thriller and epic love tale that follows the turbulent romance and entwined lives of two very distinct men who meet in the shadow of Washington during the McCarthy era.
The attractive and charming Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller, who leads a lucrative but unnoticed private political career, will be portrayed by Matt Bomer. Hawkins stays away from emotional relationships until he meets Tim Laughlin, a young man who exudes religious conviction and idealism.
Their courtship coincides with the start of one of the worst eras in American history of the 20th century when Roy Cohn and Joseph McCarthy wage war on “subversives and sexual deviants.”
Over the course of four decades, Hawk and Tim encounter challenges in both the outside world and themselves as they navigate the anti-Vietnam War demonstrations of the 1960s, the drug-fueled disco debauchery of the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.
Is Fellow Travellers A True Story?
A genuine story forms part of the basis for “Fellow Travelers.” The show is a television version of the same-titled novel by Thomas Mallon. Although the novel’s and the series’ backdrops are grounded in reality, the protagonists, Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller and Tim Laughlin, are made-up characters that the author invented just for his work. “Neither Laughlin nor Fuller are based on real people.
The production team has expressed in several interviews while promoting this period piece that the characters stated both feature fragments of people they’ve met and read about, which makes them similar to the characters one finds in Fellow Travellers.
