Recap
The second episode of Fellow Travelers takes place in 1986, which is arguably the current chronology in the series. The episode again jumps about in time to heighten the tension in the story. Hawk traveled to San Francisco in Episode 1 only to see Tim, his former flame, after finding out via Marcus that Tim had a fatal illness.
The man had initially called the understandably irate ex-lover from a phone booth at a diner, and Tim had, as Hawk had anticipated, declined to meet him after all this time. The phone had rung again at the end of the show, raising the possibility that Tim was finally phoning to set up a meeting.
But it’s evident from the opening shot of episode 2 that Tim’s sister Maggie, not Tim, was the one who had called. The woman quickly makes her way down to the diner to meet Hawk, but things don’t go well. Maggie swiftly makes it clear that she does not want Hawk to speak with Tim ever again, even though Hawk assumes that she will assist him in setting up a meeting with him.
It’s clear that Tim and those close to him were very upset by Hawk’s departure. Maggie even says that Tim was so saddened by Hawk’s actions that he was never able to find love again. Despite the fact that it is still extremely early in the series for any kind of revelation, Hawk appears to be growing aware of his blunders.
The man chooses to pay his sweetheart a visit and decides to stay in San Francisco for one extra day. However, Hawk makes a stop at a gay club en route to use the phone, where he observes the numerous gay couples and the openly gay interactions that are permitted in this day and age.
Hawk is looking at one of the AIDS awareness leaflets at the bar when two young men approach him. The AIDS epidemic is fast taking lives. When Hawk asks if the young men are afraid of the AIDS virus, they respond with pride that they are not too worried about it.
Spoilers
The title for the episode is “Hit Me.” Tim and Hawk embark on a road trip, which takes a bad turn when Tim finds out that Hawk is using the trip to gather information about Senator Smith’s opponents. The interaction between Marcus and Frankie and the racist bouncer almost destroys them.
