Ending Explained
Well, for everyone excited to know about the ending of Fingernails, it is all about discovering true love in a world where it depends on a mere test, and the decision of couples to either stay together or reject the partner to find a new one depends on it.
The film starts with the development of a test costing requiring one fingernail of a person to determine their true love and Anna getting hired by Love Institute, a company founded by Duncan that helps couples undergo several relationship-strengthening exercises to pass the test.
This is where Anna meets Amir, with whom she develops a bond so deep it makes her question her feelings for Ryan, Anna’s current boyfriend with whom she has already cleared the love test, determining them to be an ideal match in love.
The test requires the couple to rip off their nails to find if they truly are in love, which is later analyzed under a computer well. The Love Institute was created by people to help couples pass the test. Anna gets the job as an instructor at Love Institute due to her curiosity about the nature of love and discontentment in her current relationship with Ryan.
Anna gets the job along with Amir, and the two together help several other couples fall in love with each other even if the computer analysis doesn’t agree with it, thus developing a bond of friendship between them.
In the movie, the love test office has several posters on the walls telling about symptoms of love as if it is a disease like heart attack and cancer, but the clinical approach to love may be something that several couples require.
According to the company Duncan, the test was created as people felt that they weren’t falling in love, but after taking the test, around 87% of the couples failed the test, thus spiking the divorce rates and leading to the establishment of Love Institutes to help couples come closer to each other.
Well, Amir also has a girlfriend, Natasha, whom he claims to have taken the test for determining the capacity of their love and has passed with flying colors, but his fondness and love for Anna is apparent in how he looks at her.
One day, in order to calm a nervous client, Amir rips out his fingernail that Anna uses to secretly analyze their relationship. The results come out to be 50% pointing towards unrequited love between the couple as, according to Duncan, a 50% score means only one partner in the couple is actually in love with the other. Still, due to the machine’s nature, it isn’t possible to determine which one.
This result leads Anna to further question her relationship with Ryan, and she convinces him to retake the test with her, which again indicates that the two of them are one hundred percent in love.
The results help Anna learn that in the test of her and Amir’s love, it was Amir who was actually in love, as one person couldn’t love more than one partner at the same time, according to Duncan.
Meanwhile, Amir also reveals to Anna about having taken the test several times before and never getting a positive result until his analyzing test with Anna and the reason behind him taking up the job at Love Institute was to figure out what is wrong with him so he lied about being committed to Natasha who is his neighbor.
Did Anna Stay With Ryan, Or Did She Move On With Amir?
Well, for everyone excited to know about Anna’s decision, she decided to walk out of her relationship with Ryan even though she scored a perfect hundred with him to move on with Amir after Anna fails to convince Ryan to do some of the Love Institute’s exercises together to have fun.
Another instance that sealed the deal for Anna was Ryan’s admission to hearing Nina Simone’s song only because Anna loved them while they were having a shower together, leading to Anna giving herself shock treatment. Anna doubts the test score as she continues to feel discontent in the relationship, and Ryan isn’t interested in putting in more work to make her stay.
The movie’s ending indicates that love is subjective to individuals and shouldn’t be decided on analyzing factors as several couples divorced after taking the test even though they put efforts to not fail, while several other couples only stayed together due to the positive result.
The film’s end sees Anna rejecting the results of the love test and deciding to stay in a relationship with Amir instead of going back home with Ryan, and in a fit of rebel, she starts to pull off her fingernails against the notion that they can be used to determine one’s love.
The screen goes blank with Amir’s words, stating that it is going to hurt while he tends to Anna’s wounds caused by her pulling off her fingernails.
