American actress Megan Fox explores a new chapter in her life as an author, as she published a collection of poetry called ‘Pretty Boys Are Poisonous’ on 7 November 2023. The poems take inspiration from the poet’s own life as well as her imagination as they chronicle her experience of hardships and complexities that come with navigating relationships.
On 8 August 2023, Fox shared the front cover on Instagram, which depicts a snake passing through a mouth. She also shared a text on a red background that described her reasons for turning to poetry: “These poems were written in an attempt to excise the illness that had taken root in me because of my silence. I’ve spent my entire life keeping the secrets of men, and my body aches from carrying the weight of their sins.”
‘Pretty Boys Are Poisonous’ thus acts as a place of catharsis for Fox, who explores painful subjects like physical abuse and pregnancy loss through her poetry while narrating several gut-wrenching and deeply personal stories of her life.
Megan Fox and Personal Struggles
Megan Denise Fox, the famous Transformers actress, is often regarded as a sex symbol, and in 2008, was labeled the “World’s Sexiest Woman” at FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women annual listing. People magazine also named her one of 2012’s and 2017’s Most Beautiful at Every Age.
However, Fox has expressed that she feels shy and insecure and stated that she wants to portray less sexualized characters in an interview at Entertainment Tonight on 9 June 2009. With regard to her sexuality, Megan Fox is bisexual and has said that she has a general distrust and dislike of men.
In a 2009 article in Rolling Stone magazine, Megan Fox talked about her struggles with body dysmorphia that stems back to her childhood, along with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), insecurities, self-harming tendencies, and low self-esteem.
Fox’s “Complicated” Relationships
After meeting on the set of Hope & Faith, 18-year-old Megan Fox started dating 30-year-old actor Brian Austin Green in 2004. They became engaged in November 2006 and got married on June 24, 2010, in a private ceremony at the Four Seasons Resort on Maui. After having three sons together, they announced that they had separated in May 2020 after nearly 10 years of marriage.
After the release of Machine Gun Kelly’s song “Bloody Valentine,” which features Fox in the music video, the two celebrities announced their relationship in June 2020. Megan Fox is currently engaged to the American rapper and singer, which she announced on 12 January 2022.
The poem book ‘Pretty Boys Are Poisonous explores toxic dynamics in a relationship, among other topics. In a recent interview with Good Morning America, Fox explains how the theme of domestic violence in one of the poems titled “Oxycodone and Tequila” is rooted in her private involvements: “It’s not an exposé that I wrote or a memoir … But throughout my life, I have been in at least one physically abusive relationship and several psychologically very abusive relationships.”
When asked about the miscarriage described in two of her poems titled “i” and “ii,” Fox talks about it being something she experienced alongside her fiancé Machine Gun Kelly: “I’ve never been through anything like that in my life. I have 3 kids, so it was very difficult for both of us, and it sent us on a very wild journey together and separately…trying to navigate, ‘What does this mean?’ and ‘Why did this happen?’”
When asked about her transition from acting to authorship, Megan Fox told People Magazine, “Acting doesn’t really allow me to express myself fully in the way writing does because I’m reading someone else’s words under someone else’s direction. Poetry gives me a space to experience some catharsis through art.”
