At the Haikyu!! Festa 2023 event, the staff of the Haikyu!! the anime series revealed the trailer and teaser poster for “Gekijōban Haikyu!! Gomi Suteba no Kessen” (Haikyu!! the Movie: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump), which is the first film of the two-part Haikyu!! Final sequel film project.
The trailer introduced the film’s director, Susumu Mitsunaka (known for his work on the first and third Haikyu!! television anime) as well as announced its release date of February 16.
Mitsunaka will be both, the director and scriptwriter, for this highly anticipated film. This anime film will animate the long-anticipated “fated showdown” between Karasuno High and Nekoma High. The event also unveiled the film’s logo.
If you’re a fan of sports anime, then you don’t need any introduction to Haikyu!!. This series laid the foundation for other sports anime and has become a sports classic in the Japanese community.
This high-energy show takes you to the stadium and into the world of competitive high school volleyball, where our underdog protagonists, Shoyo Hinata, and Tobio Kageyama, go against all odds and defy gravity themselves to spike their way to victory.
With its contagious enthusiasm and character-driven narrative, Haikyu!! is a slam dunk (or, should I say, a spike) for anyone seeking an adrenaline-packed watch through the world of sports.

Haikyu!!: Everything to Know
Whether you’re a sports enthusiast or not, Haikyu!! has a way of pulling you into its world and leaving you with your adrenaline rushing and a motivation to suddenly become a volleyball player.
In August 2022, the team behind Haikyu!! announced two highly anticipated films. The first film is set to animate the eagerly awaited “fated showdown” between Karasuno High and Nekoma High, a moment of intense rivalry and excitement for fans.
Along with this exciting announcement, the staff unveiled the film’s official logo.
Haikyu!! originated from the creative mind of Haruichi Furudate in 2011 and ended in July 2020 with the release of its 45th and final volume by Shueisha. It continued through Viz Media’s digital and print publications, allowing fans to read the series in both, English and Japanese.
Production I.G’s anime adaptation, which began in 2014, was followed by multiple successful seasons, with the fourth season, “Haikyu!! To The Top,” split into two parts due to the COVID-19 pandemic spread. The series has also birthed stage plays, clay-animated shorts, compilation anime films, and various video anime projects,
A new stage play was active, entertaining audiences from August 19 to 27.
How Good is ‘Haikyu!!’?
Based on a Shounen Jump manga, Haikyu!! might seem like it follows typical shounen stereotypes, featuring an underdog team striving for greatness, and it does. Think of any action shounen anime and add volleyball to it, and you’ve got Haikyu!!.
That being said, there are no unrealistic power-ups or inexplicable victories here (like Blue Lock). It has a well-developed narrative with excellent pacing, following the journey of Karasuno High School as they climb the competitive world of high school volleyball.
The series also gives us views into the player’s backstories, relationships, and emotional reactions, which makes it different from many other sports anime. The series’ addition of losing games, a recurring theme in sports anime, is particularly praiseworthy. It handles the concept with depth and sensitivity, making it a beloved feature.
The OST increases the emotional impact of scenes, whether they’re intense, comedic, or dramatic. The openings and endings are also worth mentioning, as they add to the overall experience.
Whether you’re new to the sports anime genre or a longtime fan, Haikyu!! is the best gateway into sports anime. While it’s often compared to other sports anime like Kuroko no Basket, Haikyu!! differentiates itself through its aim of being realistic.
Truth being said, there are better sports anime out there, such as Ping Pong. However, give Haikyu!! a chance, and you might find yourself eagerly awaiting the next season, just like I did.
