What happened at the end of In The Shadow Of The Moon? That’s the question you might be thinking after completing this movie. This movie has a lot of time jumps, and it can be confusing sometimes. So let’s just do an “In The Shadow Of The Moon Ending Explained” and get the grip of the entire story.
“In The Shadow Of The Moon” starts in the year 2024, when we see that the whole world is a mess and all of the countries are fighting against one another. Then we go back in time to the year 1988. A pianist, a bus driver, and a chef have died with bleeding from their eyes and mouth. Some mysterious girl who can time travel is responsible for this, and Officer Thomas needs to stop her at any cost.
In The Shadow Of The Moon Plot
Officer Thomas has left for his night shift with Maddox, leaving his pregnant wife at home. They get to know about the death of a bus driver on their way, so they go to the crime scene.
Thomas’ brother-in-law, Detective Holt, lets them see the dead body. The victim has two puncture scars behind his neck. They get to know about the death of two other people; they have puncture scars on their necks as well.
Holt thinks that this could be a serial killer, so he wants to oversee this case himself for promotion.
But Thomas, being curious, goes to the hospital, and asks the doctor, but the doctor says that they don’t know anything about the substance that was injected into the victim’s body, and it’s hard for them to find the cause of death.
Maddox then takes Thomas from the hospital, they buy some food, and then Thomas purchases a bracelet for his wife. Soon, they get to know that a girl was attacked at a nightclub, and she has the same puncture scars on her neck, but she’s not dead yet. They go to the club to meet that girl; she says that some other girl attacked and injected something in her.
Halt shows up and starts questioning her; she tells him that the girl who attacked her was a black girl wearing a blue hoodie. That girl also had dried blood on her hands. After talking for some time, the girl at the club starts to feel high pain in her neck, starts to bleed, and dies.
Thomas And Maddox Goes After The Girl
When Thomas finally catches up to this girl, she tells him that she knows him. Then she tells him that he is going to have a baby girl and then his wife will die after giving birth to his daughter.
Thomas thinks that the girl is talking nonsense, but she handcuffs him and ties him to a chair. Thomas then takes out the injector and injects her own chemical into her leg. She loses her balance and dies after being hit by a train.
Thomas then gets to know about her wife’s labor, so he reaches the hospital. An officer shows him the unknown girl’s keys and says that the girl is not registered. Also, the bullet that was shot at her was of police Revolver, but Thomas didn’t use any bullet on her.
Thomas goes to see her wife; her heartbeat is going low. Sometime later, the doctor hands him his newborn baby girl and also gives him the news that his wife wasn’t able to survive.
The Year Of 1997
Nine years later, we are in 1997, and people are protesting against the missing girl and the promotion of Halt and Thomas. Thomas takes his daughter, Amy, to his wife’s grave. He sees someone has already put flowers there and is surprised to see that.
They get back from the cemetery, and he gets a call from Maddox telling him about a professor who died just in the same way. Thomas takes Amy with him to look into it. There, he gets to know that neither Halt nor Maddox has gone to his wife’s grave to put any flowers.
Then, an officer calls him to see the CCTV footage. They see the same girl from 9 years ago in the footage and think that she’s just a copycat. Thomas denies giving the footage to the press, but Halt opposes him.
Thomas then goes back to the station with Maddox, opens that case’s box again, and hands the keys to another officer to check. Thomas works on the victims while Halt shows the footage in a press conference. But the protests increased, and the Police also buckled its work as well.
One of the Officers tells Thomas that the keys were of planes made in 1996. Now the question was, if the keys were made in 1996, then how could the girl have them in 1988?
Thomas Meets The Girl Again
The suspect is then seen in an airfield, and Thomas and Maddox head there. They then meet a physicist called Naveen; he says that the mysterious girl comes every 9 years in accordance with the lunar moon.
This is because the gravitational force increases, and the time travel is possible at that time. Maddox doesn’t believe this, while Thomas is a bit skeptical of it.
Thomas and Maddox reach the airfield. Thomas climbs the fence, but Maddox stays there because of his broken leg. Thomas asks the owner about the girl’s location, but some girl has aimed a gun at Thomas, and she’s the same girl from 9 years ago.
She makes him sit on a chair and asks the owner to tie his hands.
Maddox hears all this on call from Thomas.
Maddox reaches there to help Thomas but ends up getting shot by the girl who knocks and takes Thomas with her on a plane.
When Thomas comes back to his senses, she tells him that she’s doing it all to stop the upcoming destruction and she can only come once the moon sets. When her time is up, she throws him into the sea and crashes her plane on an island.
Halt takes his force to that island, but that girl is nowhere to be found. Thomas tells him that she comes from the future, but Halt thinks that Thomas has gone crazy.
The Year Of 2006
Nine years later, we are in the year 2006. Thomas is obsessed with this case, and he has been working on it for 9 years. He’s looking for the missing physicist Naveen. He also looks up at a grave and sees that it is one of the victims, so he goes to see his wife.
The victim’s wife tells Thomas that her husband is a white nationalist. Thomas joins the dots, seeing his email list. But one woman from their white nationalist team is still alive, and he thinks that she could be the next victim.
Thomas calls Halt to find her address, but he doesn’t pick up. Thomas goes to meet Halt at a diner and tells him that the girl is coming back to the past and he needs the next victim’s address to catch her. He asks him for help, but Halt calls her Lunatic and leaves.
Thomas follows Halt and starts crying, saying Halt gives him a hug and leaves. But this was just an act to get Halt’s badge to find the address.
Thomas gets to that address and finds that the victim is dead and sees that the mysterious girl is running away. He shoots her on her hand and follows her down the road. He follows her on foot as the girl goes into a tunnel. He sees the girl disappearing in her time machine.
When he gets back, the police surround him. He screams the truth to Halt, but he doesn’t listen. He’s put in a van, and we see the physicist Naveen watching it all from a cliff.

Nine years later, we are in the year 2015. We see Naveen injecting animals with the same injector that we saw the mysterious girl use. He’s then told about a camp that was set near the sea by Thomas.
Thomas gets a text from Amy, calling him on her daughter’s birth. But then Naveen kidnaps him and tells Thomas that the mysterious girl is killing people because she wants to stop a huge tragedy in the future. Naveen has made injectors for her help, and its effects can be triggered through time.
During their talks, Thomas holds his gun to shoot while Naveen is trying to snatch it. Their van gets into an accident during their fight. Thomas gets injured and heads towards the sea. He sees the girl come out of the cave, and he starts aiming at her to shoot her.
Rya says that Thomas himself had asked her to go on this mission. She shows her the bracelet of Thomas’ wife, which was then given to his daughter and then to her granddaughter. She tells him that she is his granddaughter, Rya.
The Future Is Saved
After hearing this, Thomas apologizes to her and says that he needs to go in the past. Rya says that the past can’t be changed, but there’d be chaos in the future if they didn’t change this dimension. Rya asks Thomas to go home to his daughter.
We then see the scene of 2046 that we saw at the start of the movie. We get to know that a civil war had begun after a blast. So Rya started killing people who were involved in it, and that’s how the future changed. Then we see that the tragedy of 2046 shown in the first scene is no longer present.
Thomas goes over to Amy to meet her newborn granddaughter, Rya, and with that, the movie ends.
