Bering Sea Gold is a Discovery Channel reality exploration series that takes us to the world of gold mining in the depths of the northern Alaskan shorelines, way below the icecaps, where treacherous waters, high tides, and high stakes are rampant.
We see how a group of miners rent, purchase, and retrofit vessels with the capacity of digging, navigating, and extracting these precious metals against all odds: high tides, inclement weather, equipment malfunctions, and a schedule to fulfill because the State only gives them a certain amount of time to conduct their operations.
Bering Sea Gold Season 16 Episode 5 Recap
What a wild ride this season has been, with a group of mining crews all set on the same goal: Extract from below ground as much gold as possible, in as little time they can, while the clock runs out for the mining licenses. Each crew has had its fair share of challenges, equipment malfunctions, bad weather, bureaucratic problems, budgetary issues, and the like.
It’s cold up there, and the hazards are all the same. We begin with Chris, whose mining rig got stuck in the ice, and is having a hard time getting it out. Things are a problem; he can’t afford to overload the motor or break the propeller, as that means that he and his crew will get stranded, lose their valuable rig, and potentially risk their lives.
The show moves on to Zeke, who’s tangled with a tether, and that’s costing him time and money. Can he untangle that tether and make up for the lost time as he manages to dig up some gold, or is it game over for him?
After that, we see Shawn and his bad batch of bad luck; no matter where he sets sail, he gets nothing but dust, and not golden dust, just muck, and water. The man can’t catch a break; it’s frustrating, and we can see him having a hard time with that.
Vernon, for his own part, is the luckiest of the bunch; not only did he hit a sweet spot, managing to get a bunch of gold dust, but he might be pushing his luck with his equipment.
Bering Sea Gold Season 16 Episode 5 Ending Explained
As we can see, mining gold in this region has its ups and downs; it is a high-risk, high-reward activity, the waters are treacherous, and the equipment is prone to malfunction because drilling on ice and frozen sea beds requires special equipment that is not always up to the task, plus they are running out of time. Can they manage to deal with that as the show moves on?
Bering Sea Gold Season 16 Episode 5 Review
All in all, this episode centered around failure and dealing with challenges. Each team captain has a different approach at their frustrations, and while we all want them to succeed, it is evident that this is no kid’s game, and that’s what makes this show so interesting from all those gold prospecting shows we see on the Discovery Channel.
