What happens when you put contestants of a game show of skill inside a plexiglass cube and ask them to perform amazing challenges of motor skills, coordination, and wits in the hopes of winning a quarter million dollars? You get TBS’s “The Cube,” hosted by former Miami Heat NBA superstar Dwayne Wade that every week will put on your screens a group of players seeking to bring their A-game in different challenges as their skills, endurance, and determination are put to the test in simple, yet demanding tests inside a plexiglass box that’s always full of surprises.
Adapted from a now-defunct British game show that ran on ITV in the late 2000s, TBS’s take on The Cube is very similar to its predecessor across the Atlantic. Moreover, the show’s proven to be a replicable formula, as this skill cubic gameshow has been replicated in countries like China, Australia, Spain, Germany, Greece, and most recently, the United States, where its sophomore season is about to land pretty soon in your small screens for your viewing pleasure. So, let’s learn a little more about this game show ahead of its premiere on TBS.
What Is The Cube?
The Cube is a game show that puts people inside a gigantic plexiglass cube and gives them a series of tasks they must fulfill to win the $250,000 prize. On each stance, there’s an increasing reward, with that quarter million bucks being the top prize. Each player gets a number of “lives” or attempts to do it. In each episode, we typically see two games, but depending on the complexity, the show cliffhangs us into the next episode to see if the players made it or not, piquing our curiosity and exploiting the program’s hook potential.
If the players fail to perform the game, they lose all their earnings, bringing up the stakes. Each game is presented by a computer voice and explained by host Dwayne Wade —who does a great job with interviews, cheers, and his genuine reactions concerning the game—and the game’s examples are done by a person in a jumpsuit and a Daft Punk-esque mask called “The Body.”
What To Expect From The Cube Season 2?
As with the debut season, we can expect a new set of contestants each week getting locked up in that plexiglass cube with the task of completing different sets of challenges that put their motor skills, as well as putting their possible claustrophobia to the test. It’s fair to say that no one in this iteration of the popular game show has managed to beat the Cube yet, shedding light on the complexities of the challenges ahead.
From regular contestants to the occasional celebrity participating for charity, the show will surely bring more levels of excitement as we see hopes, frustrations, and fears come out from the many games that the sophomore season of the show has in store.
Former NBA superstar Dwayne Wade will be back as the host for this show, and as the trailer below shows us, there are more ball-bouncing, balancing acts, and fast-hand games with many new guests like former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal, Wade’s wife, Gabrielle, and many more surprises that will dazzle us week after week.
The latest season brings in a twist to the contest called “Trial Run,” which is a sort of third assist for players lucky enough to reach the fifty grand tier where they can practice a game ahead of the actual test, giving them a competitive edge as they won’t lose anything if they fail, but “Trial Run” comes with a twist, because the players must later decide if the game they’re going to play is worth winning as the real test shows its fangs! We can also expect Wade to step into the Cube and show his skills if the players are skilled enough to earn that!
