The recently released Chinese webcomic-inspired animation, Monster But Wild, is a series full to the brim with lighthearted humor sprinkled with some thought-provoking metaphors. The anime series released its pilot episode on April 18th, 2023, and continues to release new episodes for fans. The show follows the story of the main character, Dong Dong, who gets transported into a game world as one of the game’s characters and how he ventures on his way to get back into the human world.
The show has cast Yunxi Ting as the voice of Dong Dong, Jiaming Zhang as the voice of Xiong Bo, Ban Ban to voice Si Si, Lin Mo as Ye Wu, and Tu Bai to voice Pao Pao. The entire series has a lot of supporting characters, both inside and outside of the game world, that have been voiced by different voice actors.
The series revolves around our main character named, Dong Dong, who is an avid gamer with special affection for one particular game called ‘Azure.’ Things go horribly wrong for Dong Dong when he gets pulled into the Azure world, that too, as the weakest possible character from the long list of the game characters. It all starts when Dong Dong wins a prize at some game competition.
We see Dong Dong make try to make the best out of his pathetic situation by trying to befriend other weak game characters. This Chinese anime is wholesome and hilarious and has also received much praise and appreciation from fans for its almost ethereal drawings that add so much to the beauty of the series.
Monster But Wild: Plot
Dong Dong, a gamer, gets sucked into a game that he has been playing for the past ten years. It happens when he wins a huge reward for winning a gaming competition that he had entered with one of his friends. The only good thing about the entire shock of a situation was that Dong Dong, being an almost game addict, knew his way around the game world along with all of its characters.
It does not take him much time to draw out a plan on how he would make sure he does not get slayed by the actual game players and get back to his human world alive. Even if he is at the lowest in terms of strength hierarchy, he still has his intelligence intact. So he decides to find more weak characters and form together a band with them.
It is while he is adjusting to the game world that he comes across the main character of the game called, Bubble. He strikes a deal with her, promising to do his best to become her strongest pet, to which she agrees, and this leads to the start of the adventurous journey in the ‘Azure’ world. His being in their world caused the game characters and other non-playing characters to have, what the series called, an ‘awakening.’
With the characters becoming aware of their existence and identity, they all band together with Dong Dong and help him in his quest to get back to his actual life and out of the game world. Dong Dong’s situation has the makers of the game and other people in the human world thinking about the deeper connection that the game world may have with the human world.
