Disney’s adult animation series The Owl House is coming back for its third run after acquiring widespread acclaim from the audience and the critics. The show is especially loved due to its significant representation of the LGBTQIA+ community when compared to standard Disney content.

However, as elated as the fans of the shows are, the third season of The Owl House will, unfortunately, be its final season, to their absolute dismay. As if that is not enough in itself, Disney has announced that the show’s final season will not even be a full-length one. Instead, it will air three 44-minute specials. The finale of Season 2 of The Owl House left us with Luz and her friends getting stuck in the human realm.

As such, they were prepared to do whatever it took to go back to the demon realm and rescue the Boiling Isles from the danger of Emperor Belos and the Collector. After the previous season of the hit animated series made its return in the summer of 2022 after much waiting, Season 2 of Disney’s The Owl House concluded this year on May 28.

And almost immediately after the credits rolled, fans the world over began looking forward to what the future holds for the show. Lucky for them, Season 3 of The Owl House was ordered by Disney before the second season had even premiered, all the way back in May of 2021.

The Owl House Season 3 Episode 1 Preview

Through the two short clips from the first 44-minute special, which were recently released on Disney Channel’s Youtube page, Disney has teased a time skip for the third and final season of The Owl House. It is apparent from the slightly longer hair donned by each of the characters when compared to the last time we saw them.

The first episode from Season 3 of the animated series is entitled “Thanks to Them,” and it features Luz and her finally making a daring attempt to go back to the Demon Realm after months of futile trying.

The Owl House Plot

The plot of The Owl House revolves around a young human girl, Luz, who chances upon a gateway or portal to another world, a world of magic. There, she becomes friends with a rebellious witch and a warrior.

All Luz had ever wanted was to be good at something, and when she finds the demon world, she finds herself dreaming of becoming a witch herself. To make it better, Luz finds herself more than welcome in her new magical family.

The Owl House Season 3 Episode 1 Release Date

The third and final season of The Owl House’s fantasy television series is set to premiere with its first episode on Saturday, October 15, 2022, on Disney Channel and Disney XD at 9 PM ET/PT. This season will not comprise the usual 19-21 episode per season format and instead feature three 44-minute special episodes as is mentioned.

Although the first episode will air on the said date, the remaining two episodes have been confirmed to kick off in 2023. Episodes 2 and 3 will also air on Disney Channel and Disney XD, similar to Episode 1. However, the time slots for the same have not yet been confirmed.

The Owl House Cancellation Controversy

It is common knowledge by now that the critically acclaimed comedy horror series will not be returning for a fourth season as Disney has canceled it, and Dana Terrace, the creator of The Owl House, has explained just why that is.

Blowing off the steam out of her system in a Reddit post, creator Dana Terrace told the fans of the show that although it was speculated that poor ratings, budget cuts, and the high LGBTQA+ representation had led Disney to shut The Owl House down, the ultimate reason was actually branding.

Apparently, The Owl House did not fit into the Disney brand as the story is “serialized,” and its audience skewed older. The Owl House had previously faced issues airing in a few countries and was even outright banned in some owing to the LGBTQA+ content, but Terrace had refused to assume bad faith against the people she worked with in Los Angeles anyway.

She went on to reveal that such challenges provided the ideal opportunity to cancel the show, that the season 3 episodes were granted as a consolation, and that even bagging those were difficult. Terrace herself was not included in any of these decisions and was only “told” after they were taken.

At the 2022 New York Comic Con, Dana Terrace expressed disappointment over The Owl House’s cancellation: “What can you do at this point? We did our best.” Nonetheless, she appreciated the production team and the staff of The Owl House for their constant support and trying in spite of the show’s cutting.

Further, responding to a fan on Twitter about whether the show was being canceled, she replied in the affirmative and said that they were excited about what they had planned anyways. Socially significant and relevant, The Owl House begins its final journey on October 15. Tune in to see if Luz, Willow, Gus, Amity, and Hunter will find a way to return to the demon realm and bring things back in order.
