Produced by Youku Animations, The Demon Hunter, also known as Chang Yuan Tu, is a Donghua that revolves around Meng Chuan’s quest to take revenge for his mother’s sudden death. Said to be based on Wo Chi Xihongshi’s novel, this anime premiered on June 22nd, 2023.
If you’re into action-filled adventure anime, The Demon Hunter is a must-watch, as the animation and characters perfectly match the tone of its genre. The storyline begins with Meng Chuan’s village of Linjiang being attacked by monsters out of nowhere, causing the whole village, as well as his mother, to fall victim to these ruthless killers.
Humanity is closer to doomsday with these monsters rampant across the continent, but just as all hope is on the verge of being lost, the White Saints descend upon the world and protect humans from the monsters. Filled with the thirst for revenge, Meng Chuan seeks to become the best and most powerful white saint to ever exist.
The Demon Hunter: Plot
The plot of The Demon Hunter may sound stereotypically simple, but it’s much more complex than it may look. After realizing that his mother has some kind of powers, Meng Chuan tries to talk to her. Before he could utter a single word, the Monster ended up stabbing her.
Meng Chuan himself falls victim to the monster, but he is brought back from the dead when he suddenly inherits the powers his mother had, making him the youngest White Saint at the age of 6. White Saints are regarded as the protectors of humanity, and live at the Yuanchu Mountain, away from human civilization.
After the Lingjiang massacre, the survivors all grouped up in Taoist-like cities where they practiced skills every day, in the hope of reversing the disaster caused by monsters and bringing the world back to the way it was before. Three main families, Meng, Bai, and Yun, existed within the Yuyang Palace, each said to be a part of the White Saints. It’s apparent that Meng Chuan belongs to one of these families, but he doesn’t let that interfere with his training.
After practicing for years, we see a 15-year-old Meng Chuan polishing his skills to pass the test to enter Yuanchu Mountain. This wasn’t an easy thing to do, as many warriors would spend years and still not make it past the Great Divide. To pass the test, the warrior would need to be perfect in all 5 realms, which is a process that takes years for a lot of fighters.
Meng Chuan doesn’t lose hope and instead uses the need for revenge as fuel for perfecting his 5 realms. He hides the fact that he is already a White Saint and practices to be better every day. The Demon Hunter will be showcasing the journey of this powerful White Saint as he finds the monster responsible for the massacre that killed his entire village.
