In ER, Mark Greene died in Season 8 Episode 21, titled “On The Beach.” It aired on 9 May 2002 and was penned by John Wells. In this particular episode, his health was initially not good, and he wanted to travel to Hawaii. What for? To revisit his childhood days and also mend his relationship by sorting things out with his daughter, Rachel. What happened next? How did he die?
In ER, Season 8 Episode 21, Mark Greene’s death was not expected at all. After they traveled to Hawaii, Mark taught his daughter how to surf, drive a stick shift, and swim as well. Things got a bit better. One day, he told her that he had missed three Vicodin pills. Later, he apologized to her for not being taken proper care of during her childhood days.
All of a sudden, Mark suffered from a seizure. In case you don’t know, it can be described more like an electrical disturbance in the brain. Rachel became kind of helpless and failed to figure out what to do. She got terrified too. Elizabeth and Ella visited him to check how his health condition. Moreover, everyone wanted him to return to Chicago for medical treatment. But he refused to.
One day, Mark realized that he was half paralyzed, more precisely on the right side. He fell while trying to stand straight. At the same time, he coughed a lot which was initially suspected as pneumonia. During those days, he slept for long hours. Because of that, Elizabeth felt it right that Mark wouldn’t be staying alive for a longer period.
Before closing his eyes to sleep, Mark asked his daughter, Rachel, to be always generous. In his dream, he saw his family having fun at the beach. Well, it was a happy dream. The next morning, he was found on his deathbed. He passed away peacefully without letting anyone know.
Reason Behind Anthony Edwards Leaving ER
You will be surprised to know that Anthony Edwards decided to exit the series. So, the death of his character was pre-planned. Knowing this, fans also got curious to learn why the actor lost his willingness to continue with the show till the very end. On the same hand, he made a few appearances later in the form of flashbacks.
What was the reason? The actor claimed that his family was working around his schedule for eight years straight. Those were the years when he played Mark Greene’s character. He realized that it was the time when he should spend more time with his family, keeping the path of exploring new opportunities very open.
