Each episode of 1923 brings intense moments, and “Wrap Thee in Terror” continues that pattern. Taylor Sheridan does not hold back as he shows the harsh realities faced by the characters.
This episode shifts focus from Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) struggling to keep their ranch going to Alexandra Dutton (Julia Schlaepfer) fighting through a difficult journey to America. She arrives at Ellis Island, hoping to reach Montana, but the journey is filled with hardships.
The episode opens with Jacob, Jack (Darren Mann), and the other ranch workers trying to break free from the snow-covered wagon. The storm has passed, but their problems are far from over.
Zane Davis (Brian Geraghty), who is still recovering from a brutal beating in the previous season, wants Jacob to burn the wagon to provide warmth for the children. However, Jacob insists that they need the wagon to get Zane home safely. Zane tries to show that he is strong enough to ride, but the danger remains.
At the ranch, the wolf that caused trouble has been killed and hung up. Dr. Steven Miller (Mark Daneri) carries the body of his dead nurse to the car. He and Cara enter Liz’s (Michelle Randolph) room to give her a much-needed shot. Liz hides in the bathroom, but they go in and convince her to take the shot. Cara urges her to be strong, explaining that the animal was rabid. Liz gathers her courage and takes the shot without resistance.
Later, Dr. Miller informs Cara that Liz will need one shot every day. Just as he is about to leave, they spot Jacob, Jack, and the others making their way through the snow toward the house. They bring Zane inside, and the doctor quickly examines him. Jacob looks exhausted and says, “The winter just won’t end,” clearly overwhelmed by the ongoing difficulties.
The doctor discovers that Zane has fluid in his brain. He explains that this should have been treated at the hospital, and the only solution now is to drill a hole in Zane’s skull. Unfortunately, there is no anesthesia available to ease the pain. Jacob delivers the difficult news to Zane, leaving everyone to wonder what will happen next.
Liz Makes a Tough Decision
Jack and Liz are finally reunited after spending time apart earlier in the season. However, their happiness is short-lived. Jack walks in on Liz as she packs her belongings, preparing to leave.
She had already told Cara that she planned to leave the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, and now she is serious about it. Although she deeply loves Jack, she feels that this life is not what she agreed to when they got married.
The trauma from the previous season was already difficult for Liz, but Season 2 has been even more unbearable. She tells Jack that he can still be a good husband in Boston, where life would be easier for both of them.
When Cara enters the room to give Liz another rabies shot, Liz does something unexpected. She makes Jack watch as she takes the painful injection. She then says, “Eight more and I’m done with this place.” Her words are not meant as a threat, but as a statement of her intentions.
Alex Faces Hardship at Ellis Island
Even though the episode starts in Montana, much of the story follows Alexandra as she arrives at Ellis Island, the first step in her journey to Montana. She faces difficulty right from the start.
When she introduces herself as “Alexandra of Sussex,” she is met with suspicion. Realizing that she needs to make things easier, she quickly changes her name to “Alexandra Dutton.”

As she stands in long lines, she feels frustrated by how slow the process is. At one point, she meets a frightened pregnant woman. The woman warns her that pregnant women are usually sent back because they are considered unfit to work. Alex immediately understands the risk and tries to hide her pregnancy.
Her biggest challenge comes when she is called for a medical examination. She is forced to remove her clothing, which makes her feel humiliated and vulnerable. She protests, but the doctor does not listen.
The examination reveals that she is pregnant, and she is marked accordingly. She is then told that she must go through three separate examinations, making her feel even more exposed and powerless.
After the humiliating experience, Alex is placed in a waiting area with other pregnant women. Another woman warns her that the only way to enter the country is to trade sexual favors, but Alex refuses. Instead, she decides to wait for an official decision.
She is eventually taken to the supervisor’s office. At first, the man seems unkind, but the situation changes when he asks if she has any valuable skills. Alex reads in front of him, showing that she is intelligent and capable. She boldly states that she has never felt less free than she does while trying to enter America. Her words highlight the contrast between the country’s promises of freedom and the harsh reality of immigration.
To her surprise, she is allowed to enter America. In New York City, she receives directions to Grand Central Station and some advice on keeping her money safe. When she arrives at Grand Central, she secures passage to Billings, but she must stop in Boston to rebook her ticket for Bozeman. The episode ends with her sitting in the station, writing a letter to Spencer. However, when she stands up to go to the restroom, a mysterious man follows her.
Spencer Loses a Friend in Italy
While Alex moves closer to America, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) remains thousands of miles away. He is traveling through the Italian countryside with Luca (Andy Dispensa) to deliver a shipment of alcohol for Luca’s cousin, Sal Maceo (Gilles Marini). However, Spencer notices an armed checkpoint ahead, and it makes him uneasy.
Luca suggests they continue, but Spencer believes they will not escape trouble. Luca reminds Spencer that they were given pistols for protection, but Spencer is not willing to risk his life for someone else’s alcohol business.
They stop at a barn, and Spencer refuses to go any further. Luca pulls a gun on him, but Spencer quickly disarms him. Luca defends his cousin, saying that he is finally getting a share of the wealth. However, Spencer tells him that Maceo is only using him. Spencer offers Luca a chance to leave with him and head to the train station, but Luca refuses.
Before they part ways, Luca retrieves his pistol. Tragically, soon after Spencer leaves, he hears gunshots. When he looks down from an overlook, he sees Luca engaged in a shootout with the authorities. Luca is quickly killed, leaving Spencer completely alone in a foreign land.
Teonna Faces More Danger as Her Enemies Close In
In Texas, Runs His Horse (Michael Spears) finds the ranch camp he was searching for. The ranchers offer him work in a cattle drive, which he gladly accepts. They do not seem concerned that he, Teonna (Aminah Nieves), and Pete (Jeremy Gauna) have settled on the land.
Meanwhile, wanted posters for Teonna appear throughout Oklahoma. Marshal Mamie Fossett (Jennifer Carpenter) and several Comanche tribal members discover a horrific massacre of young Native Americans, committed by Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane) and Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché). While Fossett insists on pursuing legal justice, the Comanche warriors seek revenge.
As this happens, Kent and Renaud move closer to Texas. Kent believes that cowboys will not care about Teonna’s race or background, so they continue toward the border. They are determined to capture her, and by the end of the episode, they are dangerously close.
