What Year Is Dark Winds Set In?
Dark Winds is set in the 1970s, and the action occurs in the Southwest. The show revolves around Navajo police officers as they gear up for a difficult task. As the show has loosely been based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman.
The action occurs in a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley. With the show’s timeline being during the 1970s, the makers have also paid extra attention to the minute details.
As Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (played by Fargo actor McClarnon) of the Tribal Police is accompanied by his new deputy, Jim Chee (who has also acted in other shows, including Roswell, New Mexico’s Kiowa Gordon), as the duo investigates an armored truck robbery.
The makers have tried to master the minute details as the makers revealed how they had Navajo consultants on set for language and culture. Then they had the benefit of having Navajo elders who acted as background extras and people like Betty [Ann Tsosie], who played the grandmother, and Harrison Lowe, who can be seen at the show’s beginning.
This is how they had the benefit of people that were fluent Navajo speakers while pointing out that sometimes it is the dialects that are different.
