The anniversary release will be available in both the original Japanese version with subtitles and the English dub. Ticket pre-sales are expected to begin later this month. The announcement was made during GKIDS’ panel at Anime Expo 2026, where the distributor also revealed new anniversary artwork created for the theatrical release.

Your Name Changed the Anime Box Office Forever

When Your Name premiered in Japan on August 26, 2016, it quickly became one of the country’s biggest box office successes. The film earned more than ¥25 billion during its domestic run before expanding to international audiences, including North America.

Its global success was even more impressive. The movie earned more than $400 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing anime films ever released. It also became the highest-grossing original Japanese animated film at the time, surpassing Spirited Away’s worldwide box office record.

The film’s success introduced many new viewers to anime and proved that an original story could become a worldwide hit without being based on an existing manga or long-running franchise. It also helped establish Makoto Shinkai as one of the industry’s most celebrated filmmakers.

Why Your Name Continues to Connect With Fans

Your Name tells the story of Mitsuha, a teenage girl living in a quiet rural town, and Taki, a high school student in Tokyo. Their lives change after they mysteriously begin swapping bodies, forcing them to experience each other’s daily routines.

As they search for answers, the two develop a powerful emotional connection that goes far beyond their unusual situation. The story blends romance, fantasy, and drama while exploring themes of memory, destiny, and loss. The film was written and directed by Makoto Shinkai and animated by CoMix Wave Films. Its emotional soundtrack by RADWIMPS became one of the movie’s defining features and remains closely associated with its lasting popularity.

Makoto Shinkai Has More Projects on the Way

The 10th anniversary celebration comes during a busy period for CoMix Wave Films. The studio is also preparing to release the new anime short SHIRANUHI on August 21, 2026, just one week after Your Name returns to theaters.

Makoto Shinkai has also confirmed that he is working on his next feature film. While few details have been announced, fans can expect more news as development continues. For now, the focus remains on Your Name’s return to theaters. Theater listings are expected to expand closer to release, with major cinema chains preparing for the nationwide launch on August 14.
