Girls’ Generation’s YoonA has officially started filming her upcoming tvN drama Unnatural (working title), marking her next major acting project following the success of Bon Appétit, Your Majesty.

Filming began on September 28, with the mystery medical drama scheduled to premiere in 2027.

The new series is being produced by Studio Dragon and Big Wave Entertainment, with Min Ji Eun writing the screenplay and Park Yoo Young directing.

Unnatural is a Korean adaptation of the acclaimed 2018 Japanese TBS drama of the same name.

The story moves away from conventional crime investigations and instead focuses on forensic specialists who examine unexplained or unnatural deaths.

The Korean version centers on U.D.I., a fictional forensic examination and autopsy institute affiliated with South Korea’s National Forensic Service.

The series follows the specialists at U.D.I. as they investigate the circumstances surrounding deaths and attempt to uncover the truth left behind by each case.

This gives the drama a mystery-driven structure while placing forensic medicine and the stories of the deceased at the heart of the narrative.

YoonA will take on the role of Song Do Eun, a forensic pathologist working at the U.D.I. Center.

Her character appears calm and composed, but beneath that exterior is someone with deep compassion, determination, and a strong sense of responsibility.

No matter what condition the bodies on her autopsy table are in, Song Do Eun remains focused on examining the evidence and finding answers.

The character is particularly driven by the belief that the deceased may have one final story to tell.

Her determination to uncover that final truth is expected to become one of the central elements of the drama.

YoonA Takes on a New Forensic Role

The production team has expressed confidence in YoonA’s portrayal of Song Do Eun, highlighting the combination of the actress’s warm image and the character’s strong inner resolve.

The production team said,

“YoonA’s warm and bright energy will create fantastic synergy with Song Do Eun, a character with a strong inner core and human appeal.”

They further added,

“With YoonA’s detailed acting, which inspires trust simply through her name, we hope you look forward to ‘Unnatural,’ which will be reborn with a different kind of charm.”

The project also reunites screenwriter Min Ji Eun with the forensic genre. She previously worked on Partners for Justice Seasons 1 and 2 and The First Responders Seasons 1 and 2.

Her previous work has focused heavily on forensic science and investigations, making Unnatural another opportunity to explore stories surrounding death and the pursuit of evidence.

The original Japanese Unnatural, which aired in 2018, was recognized at the 96th Television Drama Academy Awards, winning six awards, including Best Drama.

Satomi Ishihara received Best Actress, while Arata Iura won Best Supporting Actor. The original series was also recognized for its screenplay, direction, and theme song.

The Korean adaptation is expected to reinterpret the original’s themes for local audiences while retaining its focus on forensic specialists and the human stories behind unnatural deaths.

Supporting Cast and the Road to the 2027 Premiere

Rookie actor Cha Kang Yoon will appear as Kang Ji Sung, a medical student from a wealthy family whose father heads one of South Korea’s top five university hospitals.

After struggling to determine his career path, Kang Ji Sung is assigned to the National Forensic Service as a public service worker.

During his time there, he develops feelings for Song Do Eun.

Lee Jin Wook has also been reported to be positively considering an offer to join the drama as Goo Seung Hyuk, a cool-headed forensic pathologist.

His character has experienced a tragic incident in the past and has chosen to suppress his emotions while concentrating strictly on objective evidence and facts. His casting has not yet been officially finalized.

YoonA’s new drama comes after Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, in which she played French chef Yeon Ji Young.

The series reached a peak nationwide rating of 17.1 percent according to the report, becoming tvN’s highest-rated drama of 2025.

YoonA subsequently received several awards, including the Female Drama Actor award at the 2026 Korea First Brand Awards, the Visionary of the Year award at the 2026 Visionary Awards, and the Naver Popularity Award at the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards.

With filming for Unnatural now underway, attention is turning to YoonA’s transformation into a forensic pathologist and the drama’s mystery-driven story.

The series is scheduled to premiere on tvN in 2027, although its exact broadcast date, time slot, and episode count have yet to be announced.
