Minoru Mineta remains one of the most divisive characters in My Hero Academia, even after the anime and manga have concluded. His frequent inappropriate comments about girls and disregard for personal boundaries have made him a target of criticism among fans. However, Brina Palencia, who voices Mineta in the English dub, believes that some of the hostility directed at the character overlooks an important detail: he is still a teenager.
In an exclusive interview with CBR, Palencia discussed the intense reaction to Mineta and explained why she believes viewers should consider his age when judging his actions. She acknowledged being surprised by the amount of anger surrounding the character, particularly because she sees a difference between criticizing his behavior and expressing hatred toward him.
Palencia argued that Mineta should not be judged as though he were an adult with authority or influence. As she put it,
“He was just a kid going through puberty and not doing it gracefully.”
The actor also compared the intensity of the backlash to the way audiences might judge an adult who abuses a position of power. In her view, Mineta is a student who is still developing, rather than someone occupying a position of authority.
The Voice Actor Condemns Mineta’s Behavior but Opposes the Online Backlash
Palencia’s defense does not mean she considers Mineta’s actions acceptable. She specifically acknowledged that some of his behavior crosses boundaries and that the character should face consequences for it. She also praised the way the series frequently has his classmates confront him when he behaves inappropriately.
“I do not condone some of the actions that [Mineta] took,”
Palencia explained. She added that touching someone without their consent should never be acceptable, regardless of the person’s age or intentions.
Her main concern is the distinction between allowing teenagers to experience attraction and excusing behavior that violates another person’s boundaries. Palencia argued that having sexual thoughts during adolescence is normal, but that young people must also learn how to express themselves respectfully.
This distinction is central to her argument. She is not asking fans to ignore Mineta’s flaws or celebrate his inappropriate actions. Instead, she wants audiences to recognize that a teenage character can make mistakes while still having room to mature.

Brina Palencia Says Anime Fans Should Consider Mineta’s Age
Palencia also questioned why certain adult anime characters receive more acceptance despite displaying similar or worse behavior. She believes audiences should consider a character’s age, personal experiences, and influence before deciding how to judge their actions.
“Obviously, if Mineta were older and an adult, it would be a different story altogether. What’s confusing to me is how many characters are adults in anime who express the same feelings, often do worse, and yet are honored. Why are we attacking the child in that position?”
she said.
The voice actor further warned that intense online criticism can have consequences beyond discussions about fictional characters. Younger viewers who identify with Mineta or share similar insecurities could interpret the hostility as a judgment of themselves.
Her concerns are not entirely new. During a 2020 My Hero Academia panel covered by The Beat, Palencia also discussed Mineta’s immaturity and how his classmates help him understand his shortcomings. She suggested that his gradual development is an important part of the character.
The actor’s latest comments revisit that position while acknowledging why viewers find Mineta frustrating.
Mineta Remains One of My Hero Academia’s Most Divisive Characters
Mineta’s personality has made him a recurring source of debate throughout My Hero Academia. While his comedic role frequently revolves around his attraction to girls, some of his actions have been criticized for crossing the line between harmless comedy and inappropriate behavior.
The series also gives his classmates opportunities to challenge his attitude, although that has not stopped viewers from disliking him.
Palencia’s comments offer another perspective on the discussion without dismissing the criticism. Her argument is that audiences can hold Mineta accountable while remembering that he is a teenager who has room to learn and change.
All seasons of My Hero Academia are available to stream on platforms including Crunchyroll, Hulu, Disney+, and Netflix, depending on regional availability.
