Chapter 16 shifts the spotlight entirely onto Chiwako Oshimori, the 23-year-old manager who keeps the “Under Doctor” operation running smoothly from the shadows. While Haiji heads to Russia for a follow-up surgery over the next two days, Chiwako finds herself with something almost unheard of in her life, a full day off.
The chapter opens with her explanation of how she earned it: she completed two full days’ worth of paperwork in a single day, and she’s absolutely determined to enjoy the free time she’s won.
We get a brief but poignant flashback into her past as a member of the Oshimori clan, a secretive shinobi family that controls underground businesses. Chiwako was raised to cut off all normal human relationships and devote herself entirely to the clan. She was even sent to a regular school purely as a surveillance exercise, never allowed to actually live like an ordinary person.
Working full-time for Dr. Haiji gradually loosened that leash, and bit by bit, she began experiencing the everyday joys she had always been denied. Now, on her first full day off in three months, Chiwako throws herself into a shopping mall with infectious, almost childlike enthusiasm, taking in the food court smells, trying on clothes, eating a satisfying meal, and belting out songs at karaoke. Her joy is completely genuine and deeply endearing.
Her adventure takes an unexpected turn when she encounters a lost young boy near the movie theater. Though he stubbornly denies needing help, Chiwako, ever the sharp observer, sees right through his act.
She gently but firmly guides him, and the two end up bonding over their shared love of the movie “Pikotan 3.” When they part ways, the boy quietly gives her a Pikotan keychain as a small token of thanks, leaving Chiwako visibly moved.
The heartwarming afternoon is disrupted near closing time when Chiwako stumbles upon a would-be bomber in the mall a villain threatening to blow the place up. Drawing on her shinobi instincts and her genuine fury at anyone threatening the place she loves, she confronts him without hesitation.
The chapter closes the following day, with Chiwako arriving to work in an unusually bright mood. Haiji finds it unsettling, but Chiwako simply states she works for him because she wants to and that it feels good to help people. The day off, chaotic as it became, clearly did her a world of good.
